We are getting My Sky HDi installed tomorrow along with a 2nd decoder in the bedroom. Is there anything specific I should be pushing the installer to do?

I have read about the 4 throat LNBs and running of multi coaxes briefly here on GZ - I'll give this a nudge.

We already have a dish on the roof (2nd storey) which feeds into a diplexer in the ceiling space where it is mixed with the VHF/UHF signal before being split to the downstairs lounge and the upstairs bedroom.

Anything I should hit the installer up for while he is here?

Thanks.

Get him to show you how to remove the cover to the remote control. Sounds silly but its a mission until you know how, as some on GZ have found.

Dont worry about the quad output dual throat LNBs they have not hit our shores yet so he will have little to offer. At this point only new installs are required to have dual cable runs (either as two cables or a siemese) from dish to box (albeit that the 2nd run is left unterminated) but for existing installs nothing changes at this point.

Yes get a demonstration on how to remove the remote cover, its not as easy as it should seem.

At some point in the near future a 2nd run from dish to STB is required (when a quad output LNB appears) so if you dont want your house ripped apart or cables trapsed all over outside walls then you may want to apply some time yourself (when you have a quite moment) as to how that might happen so when an installer appears in the future to do it you have a plan to minimise his impact :)

You could hit him up for a RF convertor for piping out the MySky feed to other feeds over coax - MySkyHDi does not have an RF out. Not an issue if the other TV has a sky decoder already.

They seem to be installing the 2nd cable whenever they visit a site. I had a decoder changed and the installer put in the 2ns cable while he was here.

when I upgraded to my sky 2 weeks ago they didnt run a second cable. Did like keeping original decoder free for four months that was a bonus

that would be an ecumenical matter

I suspect it all depends on how hard the cable is to run, this is going to be a big expense to Sky as time goes by, and virtually impossible on newer homes where cables have been prewired with no re entrant access, hope they have a plan B such as a stacker.

What's a stacker?

The tech ran new cabling from my dish (as well as installing the new receiver?? on the dish) to the new MySky decoder last week when I upgraded Smile

He has been and gone. No new cabling - it is a rainy day and the house was already wired, he did mention it would be needed sometime soon though.

He showed me the My Sky HDi battery cover without even asking, made mention of it being tricky :-)

Cool enjoy your new toy, for all its occasional lockups its a great product (and I dont work for Sky!).

A stacker is a frequency multiplexer, basically the IF from one orbital slot (say Optus D1) will be channeled in the IF from 950-1450MHz and the IF from the other slot from 1500-2100MHz, thus only one cable from the dish is needed assuming the stacker is mounted at the dish. The STB is simply needed to be told that so rather than sending a 22kHz tone it instead tunes to one if sector or the other.

A new software version 2.1.0.2 for the MySKY HDi went out last night. It should improve/fix the problem with lockups when three tuners are recording.

Manaia, the word "should" is a bit pessimistic :) lets hopes its a real fix, because other than that bug they seem to run pretty much as advertised.

Marginally off subject but a 'need to know before the installer arrives'.

I have a shed on my property that is 'mission control',  with antennae, water pumps, sewage controllers etc.

I receive Freeview DTT from one of these antenae and push it to my house 40m away via underground cable (Belden Heavy Duty RG6)

The reception is superb. (both analog and digital)

I intend to get Sky Digital installed shortly.

Question,

Can I  mux (mix) this DVB-S signal with the DVB-T signal and pass it down this same cable without problems, or do the two need separate signal paths.

Hi, yes you can, as to if the installer will be happy to do it is another thing. Also he will want to run a dual run as eluded to earlier to facilitate expanded services on D3 (when launched), so he may be under pressure to ensure two runs can be in place.

Question is, why can the dish not go on the house directly, dont forget a dish can be mounted on the ground if wanted.

As an aside, and manaia may be able to confirm but I understand that in the immediate future it will only be HD services that will make use of D3 capacity, but obviously with time that will change so that both SD and HD will use some D3 capacity. So if you only want standard sky then the second feed may be only need in a larger timeframe, dont forget there are 700,000 other subs out there with only one feed at this time, so my guess is that D3 will only be used for HD subs so the pool of subs that need upgrading in the near term is much much smaller.

Cheers
Cyril
