gareth41: Is discovery included in the "Free-to-air" package? A frined of mine who was away for several months downgraded his sub to free-to-air only, to my surprise he could still get Discovery aswell as all the free-to-air channels, but nothing else. If this is true then I may downgrade as most of my "Sky" viewing is Discovery anyway, I can get other Docco channels like Disc Science on 3.6m dish which sky dont have.

wait, what?

there is a FTA only package?
how much? and can I still keep MySky?

FTA+Mysky would be awesome for, say, $30/month

yes thats exactly what my mate did, I think the free-to-air option is $20/month plus another $10/month if you have mysky hdi. You dont need the HD ticket to get TV1, 2 and 3 in HD.

sweet. do you know if he just asked for it, or do you need to have any special criteria to leave or something?

I really only ever watch or record FTA channels.
Do you know if you can get multiroom with that?

Why not just get a Freeview HD PVR unless not in coverage in which case get a Freeview satellite PVR unless you want HD in which case this make sense.

Can I just receive the Free to Air channels with my decoder?

Yes you can, this is known as the Decoder Rental or Downgrade option which is a monthly subscription cost of $18.70 per decoder, and this will give you the following channels:

TV1, TV2, TV3, TVNZ 6 & 7,C4, Prime, Trackside & Maori TV. You must remain on the decoder rental option for a minimum period of one month, but there is no maximum period. (If you are a Telecom customer on the TVLINE deal this option is not available).

Please note of you are a My Sky/My Sky HDi subscriber paying a monthly rental fee $15.00 this will still apply should you downgrade to decoder rental (ie $18.70 + $15.00).

Also Sky have been making one of the startup channels free each month, currently this month it's Discovery so next month it will be something different.

Also I've noticed they seem to be making one of the news channels free each month.

my wife would never let me spend $300+ on a freeview PVR, but she would be fine about $30/month. (weird huh, but thats the way it is)

plus I would like the option to be able to upgrade every so often to sports for big events, and then downgrade afterwards, which you cannot do if you have no sky relationship at all

It seems we've either been forgotten about, or customers who pay their Sky sub on the Telecom bill are being treated differently?

FYI I'm a Vodafone customer with my Sky account paired with them, and I got the letter. Wonder if it's all Telecom customers or just a subset of random ones.

I have basic Sky through Telecom and pay for sport separately and I also have heard nothing. When I got the new Sport pricing I rang telecom in a vain hope someone might actually know what was gong on but all I got was the "...we have no plans to change the price." After some back of the envelope calculaitons I figured out it would cost me around $10 a month extra to stay with Telecom (we have a Christchurch line rental) so I have moved to Sky for all of it.

My conspiracy theory is that with the new Telecom/Sky hook up this ius a cunning way to get us off the old deal.

I spoke with Telecom about this also and was told that Sky set the prices and that Sky have not made a change to the price that Telecom are charged. Telecom suggested I spoke to Sky about this. So I did speak with Sky and sky told me that because I pay for sky basic with telecom that sky cannot discuss the contract I have with telecom as sky have no control over it.
At the very least I would have expected a letter from Telecom advising that they were not going to make any changes to their charges, it is bad practise for any company not to communicate properly with their customers!!
