Aren't there (at least) two issues here? One is Sky's misinformation on Netflix/streaming generally etc - and I totally agree with the Sky-hate going on in this thread on that point. Overall Sky infuriate me for all the sorts of reasons, monopolistic and others, discussed above.

Another issue is Sky's refusal to carry Slingshot ads - which I sorta get. Suely TVNZ would not allow TV3 to advertise on their networks, and vice versa? The reasoning and logic used for banning Slingshot ads is despicable but maybe the banning itself is not. What if Sky had simply said "No Slingshot, we won't carry your ads because you're a competitor, end of".

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

insane: Is it really blowing up in their face, or just on GZ?

People who have SKY probably don't need/want anything else and don't bother with this "war of words".

I feel sorry for the poor saps who don't know better than to pay for SKY.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

So tell me what I'm supposed to be doing in order to watch all the sport that I do?

Giggs: Er, just to play devils advocate (and putting to one side the stupid piracy comments) why should Sky have to play Slingshot's adverts?  I bet they won't play Telecom Lightbox advertising either just as they do not advertise TV One or TV3, so why is this any different?

They don't, which is why I don't think it's at all anti-competitive as some people are saying. There was a time when TVNZ wouldn't play Sky's commercials and then decided they would rather just have the revenue, so they changed their mind. But Slingshot can't insist that Sky play their commercial, Choice (for arguments sake) can't insist TV3 play their commercials, and I can't insist that TVNZ play my 30 second commercial where I do nothing but smile and wink at the camera.

Stream it. I'm yet to see something on Sky that cant be streamed...... not that ive seen much Sky lately ;)

NRL was the only reason my wife had Sky when i met her, but now she can stream it from the NRL site or one of the dozens of streaming sports sites out there, for hell of a lot less than Sky are charging.

They can't be compelled ( I think) to play the Advertisements or any advertisements however to make a press statement full of misleading half truths and probably outright false statements is not good. They could have simply said they did not wish to promote a competitors product.

All the streaming services I have seen all have one thing in common, terrible visual quality and very average sound. It maybe an alternative but only just.

it made the papers, and the radio news. So probably.

Sky gave Slingshot much more publicity by rejecting the ads.

It is possible to have great streaming services. We primarily watch NetFlix and Hulu now, and when our Internet connection behaves (which it mostly does), it is indistinguishable from traditional terrestrial or satellite TV broadcast.

We're also participating in the Lightbox beta, and that has pretty good visual quality. Its not quite on par with what we see with NetFlix and Hulu, as it tends to drop frames, causing the picture to stutter a little. But its still very watchable, and is the best PQ we've seen with any non-geoblocked NZ SVOD service. And its still in beta, so this could improve by the time it launches.

Everytime I see skytv at someones place all I notice is how compressed it looks compared to Netflix, youtube etc. Too many over compressed channels.

Except we are talking about sport and NRL in particular here, not TV shows.
