Let me just recap our position:

  • We don't have a suicide wish (sic).
  • We're fully aware that content and availability on existing devices (along with price) will be the primary factors that make or break a service like ours.
  • We've made a good start, but in the next couple of months we'll expand our device range significantly.
Rest assured that I do read along, even if I won't post constantly.

Good to hear.
Do you have an actual date for Chromecast - as it is a low cost way for your customers to access the service on a range of devices

On a side note, anyone else sick of the overly dramatic subjects to some of these topics? Suicide? Really? After sinking 20M into it? Obviously it's not what they want.

I've got a target date, but I am not sharing it yet.

We need to develop the custom player (to facilitate protected content), test and submit to google for review, while simultaneously adding the functionality to iOS/Android builds, test and submit those to the relevant app stores. So a fair amount of dependency on 3rd parties certifying - and the Google Cast certification is pretty rigorous (very different from Google Play store submissions).

Development looks good so far and none of the steps need to take that long, but all introduce uncertainty, so we'll hold off a little before setting expectations around a date.

Not me. Some good debate, incl. contribution from Lightbox. Think of it from their perspective, they've had some useful feedback from a variety of contributors over the weekend.

(And I've even learnt that I'm a total dork for buying a Panasonic TV).

Did you read what I wrote? It's the emotive subject I am taking exception to, the same discussion could have been had with a topic subject far less over the top.

I disagree! What if everyone bought Samsung? Think about the consequences. Haven't you ever seen Sci-Fi movies where monopolistic tech corporations have taken over the world? wink

Happy with my Panasonic. Excellent product.

Making your Android apps Samsung exclusive seems really short sighted considering the dramaric decline in android market share Samsung's been experiencing. They're not going to dominate android forever and NZ isn't going to be sheltered from this trend forever either.

Of course, there's nothing fictional about it. I was trying to lighten it up. I added the wink and everything! :-)

Maybe Samsung developed the App. Used their devs, and their money, and wanted some sort of contra for the deal?

Probably same went for the SmartTV Apps. Samsung paid for (and maybe did) the development. Pretty sure they have devs for them. Do the other brands in NZ have Developers for their smart TVs?

Add me to the Panasonic TV owners club.  Before that it was a Sony.. but I've vowed for the 2nd time never to buy their products again.  (The first time was after the rootkit fiasco.  The 2nd time was the PSN passwords in plain text.   They seem to make nice hardware, but their software is shocking)

Panny here too, same model the smaller one, 42, in bedroom. I can use my iPad to it, or my PS3 to it. Or I could buy a base Samsung BT player wirth Smart hub to be the STB, so there are easy options no matter what devices anyone has or doesn't have.

Bear in mind that for video streaming, it's not just market share that is important, but also propensity to pay for apps and services on top of having the tablet
i.e. a Samsung Tablet owner who has shelled up $700-$1000 for his high quality tablet is far more likely to be willing to pay for a video streaming service than someone who got a free chinese generic tablet thrown in with something.

http://siliconangle.com/blog/2015/02/26/report-apple-samsung-loses-tablet-market-share-to-generic-brands/

"The top two tablet makers, Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., lost market share to generic brands in 2014, according to two new reports from research firmStrategy Analytics.

Combined, these generic brands accounted for 70 million devices or 29 percent of tablet shipped in 2014 while Apple and Samsung only accounted for a combined 43 percent, reports Re/code.

Apple remains the number one tablet vendor, with a share of 26 percent while Samsung is in the second spot with 17 percent of the market.

These generic brand tablets mainly consist of entry-level and ultra-low priced tablets sold in emerging markets or as part of heavily discounted holiday promotions in the U.S. and other developed markets. Generic brand tablets are especially popular with wireless carriers in the U.S., where tablets are often given away for free to attract subscribers.

“It’s pretty easy to find the deals: Get a data plan and a tablet for free,” Eric Smith, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics told Re/code.

Apple is unconcerned with slowing iPad sales. In the company’s most recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the iPad has a promising future and that he expects sales to stabilize “over the long run.” He cited a recent report from Chitika Insights that found that in excess of 70 percent of tablet-based Web traffic in North America came from iPad users.

Consumers may be “buying” these generic brand tablets on carrier contracts, but the research suggests they are not using them."

ChromeCast would be a very useful enhancement.   I hadn't heard of ChromeCast a few months ago.  Now we have two.  The ability to start casting and then sleep the casting device is very convenient.  It saves having to manage power cords, HDMI cables and device positioning when we choose to watch Lightbox.   But I would still need an app for my android phone or W8 tablet.  I'm not silly enough to buy a whole new device to get one app, the availability of which is being deliberately limited.
