My experience with Sky Go has been very positive.  It just works for me - at home, at my mate's house, hotels if the WiFi is good.

I watched Kenya NZ today

Even at work  (shhh!).

Correct me if I'm wrong but my impression is that Sky has always lagged (far) behind in keeping up with the latest technological developments, only implementing things like HD partially and grudgingly when it can no longer be put off. If true, I assume this is another (short-sighted) cost-saving measure to keep profits flowing to the shareholders.

Well as I stated before, I think it's not really entirely that, though it's hard to argue there is SOME merit to that argument. I suspect that the leadership is set in their ways, not really keen to embrace the new technology and probably didn't have the knowledge or experience to engage someone who knew how to do it properly.  I think they spent quite a lot of money on it, and don't have an easy avenue to fix it because the issues with it are not "fixable" as in the platform just may not be built to be scalable.

If that's the case they need to take their lumps and buy a new platform, though that would take considerable time, and with the upcoming merger, I suspect they won't be doing anything till well after that, and part of the reason for the merger was to see if VF could fix the platform somehow?

Well SkyGo isn't a cost saving measure, it was a cost to them and its not used by way of a fee.

Sure it seems to falter on high usage, but perhaps hey didn't consider it as being a high usage product. Who would watch a high profile sport on a phone or tablet when you can watch it on a TV, but it seems, many do. I wonder why?

The cricket I watched was better quality than usual, quite impressed, and I was upstairs while the wifi is downstairs, it was 100% reliable. Cricket isn't RWC, but is it the individual high value sport that falters, or the whole platform falters due to the overall high usage?

I think sky know that it will fall over when every there a big event - this free addon that cost them money in bandwidth and will only want to spend x on it. They can either spend more money to upscale on big event or let it crash, current they let it crash. All I can see them doing if this become a big PR issue is drop it and say, "from now on if you want internet access please buy fanpass - have a nice day"

They can say anything they like and their paying customers can tell them where to shove it. Sky Go is not free. It is an added service for subscribers, who are already paying through the nose. If it creates expectations it cannot meet, those customers will be annoyed. It doesn't matter how many cop-outs are cited in the terms and conditions. A lot of people already do not love Sky. As (legal) alternatives become available, those who have been annoyed will increasingly jump ship.

total agree with you but this sky - all they will do if you complain is A: do nothing, B: drop the service or C: most likely one really, add it as a cost $$$$ addon if you want it. as for legal alternatives - we will need a law change to stop exclusive right in a region before that happens.

Well, the best option is to drop it. I hope they do. I guess then the subscribers will want a refund, new thread, lol. Too much hate here

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

True. All providers, SVOD and linear will have to go to court together as they all run some exclusives. And the IOC for supplying exclusivity in sport.

Having the same business model that Moro bars have wont really work, I'd like to see what it would be like if ALL content was right free.

I don't recall saying it was a cost saving measure.

If they didn't think that in the online world of 2014+ people wouldn't consume content on digital devices in significant quantity, it further supports my assertion that the wrong people are leading sky presently (I don't think even you could debate that). John Fellett is well out of his depth, probably a decent enough CEO

of a traditional company, but not suited to the fast-changing digital age that Sky MUST adapt to, to survive.

Not sure what you were expecting given the thread title :)

I don't have anything specific against sky, I am not one of the typical people who think Sky should be $20 a month. I DO however, feel that Sky needs to open the lines of communication with it's customers, and make sure it's products are released with enough scalability to cope with sports mad Kiwi's.

Ms R did, I should have clarified that, sorry

I read somewhere that it wasn't designed for mass usage, Kirsty Way said that, no idea what article. Hence who in big numbers would watch it on a tablet, ugh. Well I have watched tennis and cricket on my iPad outside in summer having a few cold ones, but what she said intimated its more a casual thing. But how many are using it in big numbers, I don't get that.

Leading Sky. Well thats a difficult topic here as here its a Sky hatefest, which makes it impossible to discuss anything Sky. But lets have a go. Netflix came here, Sky gets endless jabs about being slow to react, blah, blah. They should have created Neon, Fanpass well before NF got here, and got everyone to SVOD, and can the satellite costs, thats easy? The take up rate in NZ for SVOD is very poor. So they would bled money hand over fist, from losing massive customers as the masses don't understand streaming yet. Paying satellite fees as well as that runs to 2018/2019. Netflix is a light rabbit, Sky is an elephant in terms of its assets. 800,000 STB's,  customers, probably a million dishes out there, you don't change that in a week. And they cant as they are locked into Optus. Looking towards 2019 when they will either PUSH migration to SVOD but run two systems (assuming rights) and updated Optus costs are low, or they kick satellite to touch and drop ALL of it for SVOD. Neon is here and its fine apart from lacking HD, which is coming. Fan pass works very well. They will drop SkyGo or run that off Neulion perhaps. Then its done, everyone on SVOD. But given the difficulty to do that and the Optus contract, its meaningless to call them slow to react, unless you want to dump a lot of cash. Financially, they have been little more than scratched, so that does justify their take on moving to SVOD.

Oddly the naysayers were thing over if Sky dropped satellite, what about those who have to have satellite??? Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Id say drop satellite 100% and thats it, making them 100% modern.  The shorter story is its trendy to jab large companies, those that arent using IT as much as others, thats it. No real basis. Well, when I had Sky it blows SVOD away for quality and reliability. So much for todays tech, yesterdays is far better for video.

Sky will adapt, off course they will, its not a finical issue right now, Optus has her locked it. I'd say its working out well timing wise for when Optus goes. Time to manage the masses off the MySky's by then.

Like I said in my rant above, Way said somewhere that it wansnt expected to be a heavy used feature. Now and then, on the patio etc, but it seems on big events, its raided. I wonder how many are using other propels SkyGo login?? It does seem a bit high usage to me. Especially when so many bag SkyGo for being useless, now there are complaints from all the many users?? Clearly their expectations weren't correct. If its just a matter of scaling it up, they may, or may later. Better perhaps to advise its not designed  to be a second MySky, or drop it and re release it later. No one would get Sky for SkyGo, but its a useful freebie.

I've found its quality on a PC attached to the PC pretty low. But looks good on iPad, possibly fresh related? Be bet resting to see where they go when flash is blocked from chrome. I'm sure I saw a Mashable or engadget saying that wasn't far away.
