IainD: Contrary to some misapprehension, once you pay the $200 outright or the monthly $10, you own the box outright

Not sure why you think this? Any source or link?

Jiriteach:

Also @jiriteach this is what I got from Sky:

Six boxes per account is the standard limit (however we are happy to talk with individuals who may want more than this).

Each new Sky Box will cost $200, our most loyal customers will be contacted with a special offer on this price for their first box.

Thanks. Thats also mental - Need to potentially pay $600 to upgrade 3 boxes!

it is a lot to pay for something that will do the same as i have got now . I dont need it for the apps , my TV's do that and the Sky box records enough that i have never needed extra space or more channels to record at the same time to warrant  paying $600 to do it.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I am confused, and hoping I am wrong.
I like the idea of the pod, and seems to be just like vtv which we have and love.
We don't bother with the sky paid channels as they are not of interest.
I would happily pay the $100 for the pod and get 3 day rewind like vtv does.

But do I now need to also pay a sky subscription for free to air channels???!?

I would be bitterly disappointed if so.

$100 for the pod, PLUS $34 bucks every single month for sky starter (free to air channels) is a huge cost over vtv cost. Would be to much for me!

Agreed. I use the TV or Chromecast with Google TV for my apps so dont need the Sky box for this. I do wonder if they will change their mind else uptake will be minimal. Who's going pay $200 for this?

If the free to air channels are not free like the way VodafoneTV implemented it then I don’t really call the Sky Pod as an alternative to VodafoneTV. The Sky Pod seems like a downgrade to VodafoneTV. I wonder what was Vodafone reason for discontinuing VTV whether it was a cost factor or not.

the amount of people paying for tv was small compared to Freeview viewers, and Freeview only means no revenue and all cost for Vodafone.

high costs and low revenue. hmmm. very easy to say "not my problem any more".

aside from the dying HFC network, I wonder if there's anything left of the TelstraClear acquisition?

VTV was no strings attached, this 'Sky Pod' has strings attached. I loved how you could pay a month to month sub for Sky instead of being locked into a contract for a year. When lockdown rolled around, FTA had nothing interesting, streaming apps got boring after a while and got sick of ads on YT. The joys of VTV was you could skip the ads and record to the cloud for FREE, now Sky wants to charge $15/m for the privilege.

Sorry Sky, but its a no from me. I won't be the only one!

Not so sure about that. According to this link, "We continue to own the Sky Box or Sky Pod and all other equipment we provide you, and you will need to return it to us if you cancel."

Any reference to 4K content or improved audio output?

Just seems to be the same stuff with prettier interface.

These days who doesnt have a tv which can play apps already...

Netflix on tv is 4k but not 4k if sky box?

Both Sky Pod and New Sky box are listed as 4k-HDR ready. Assume both will run netflix etc in 4k.

With regards to sky, it is unclear how much UHD content they are going to offer, and if they will charge an upsell fee to access it (I think they still, in 2022, charge $10 for HD to those who don't qualify for it for free as part of a bundle (such as multi-room users)).

If sky want to carry a decent number of channels (for the box) in UHD (at a decent bit-rate), they are going to need a lot of satellite bandwidth. They will all need to be duplicated in lower quality for those with the current boxes during the (I assume multi year) change over period).

Nope... There is nothing extra (worth anything) that you get with this box.

You get streaming services like Netflix (which give you 4K/HDR content) - but like you say everyone can already do this already...

You get more drive space + can record more channels at once... (Neither of these has ever been an issue for me with the current box)

Sky will still only give you the same picture quality that you "enjoy" right now.

I have no idea why anyone would pay $200 to SKY to "Upgrade" the current box. This would only ever make sense if they started broadcasting sport in 4K (Which they are not).

Since the channel duplication was dropped with satellite upgrade to DVB-S2 H.264 on all transponders all Sky customers receive the HD streams by default for no additional charge. Many channels are still not HD though.

I am struggling to understand why anyone would want this? Especially with a $200 upgrade fee? Sure there is a bigger drive and you can record more shows at once but this has never really been an issue for me. I am sure most people already have another way of watching other streaming platforms on their TV and those platforms already support 4K and HDR.

I only have SKY for sport and unless SKY start actually broadcasting their content in 4K/HDR (Streaming or Satellite) - then I do not see any point in this new box.

Being 4k-HDR ready has got to be the main draw-card for the box.

I don't think the sky broadcast trucks support 4K yet, but UHD feeds for overseas sport events are already available. Would seem kinda pointless releasing a 4k Box if they arn't going to broadcast stuff in 4k.

Minor draw-cards would be:

  • Bigger hard drive
  • Ability to run the likes of netflix on the box (meaning those without a smart TV no longer need a second set top box.
  • General experience improvements.
  • Non IR remote (no longer need box in line of sight)
