It's also worth mentioning that Sky do offer IP distribution, they don't exclusively offer satellite. It'd be better if they were functionally equivalent.
Handle9:
The claim was that Sky could have heaps of excess contractors sitting around to effectively have unlimited resources. If those contractors had nothing to do they wouldn’t stick around. They’d go off and find something else to do.
That’s exactly right, and that’s what I and many other contractors used to do, we were out doing our own thing
most of the guys then had a background in the trade and were self-employed anyway.
I was in the same boat, had my own business, and still doing contract work for my old company Tisco, so I treated sky as a bit of a bonus as you got work without having to look for it.
But I didn’t depend on it.
Having a pool of contractors in a similar situation , I can’t see why it wouldn’t work, but if their only source of income was through sky then obviously it wouldn’t.
Handle9:fair enough. tho at one point they had a lot of contractors and work was hit and miss. be booked out for a month then nothing for a month.

It totally amazes me, the things that people expect businesses to do to make life better for them as a consumer, that they would be outraged by if they were asked to do by their employer, or read employers were doing to employees or contractors, in a news article.
yeah, used to get a lot of flak if people thought we where sky personal. you would get treated like crap. once they realize we just underpaid subbies they where usually good. used to get a bit of "if the tech doesn't do this or that i'm going to cancel my subscription". there is some real horror stories where that ended badly.

thats how it was. for most guys it was part time work, they contracted to many different companies or their own work. but they went away from that and wanted exclusive contractors but without paying them for that.
Satellite dishes and satellite’s have gone the way of the dodo.
I've been in behind Digital Install "Technicians" - and this true, (not necessarily SKY contractors, but same principle), who spend a couple of hours or so replacing an LNB or bad coax simply so the client can watch Free view on 2-4 year old SMART TV's that just needed an internet connection, this would take less than 10mins to accomplish the same task, but better - no rain fade etc.
That's not right?

It would be very interesting to know the cost to Sky of using satellite transmission. While there are customers who cannot stream because internet to their home is not up to it, the advent of Starlink should cover this although the cost is higher than 'terrestrial' internet. At what point would a diminishing number of Sky customers on satellite-based packages (either from cancellation or move to streaming) make satellite transmission unsustainable?

Sky paid Optus $200M for 10 years.
Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Define "terrestrial internet".
Starlink $2000 setup costs where solid FWA is available? I see this all the time, Starlink plugged on FB locals pages where the locals don't realise 4G is an option.
One client paid that much for Starlink, when the Spark tower is 430m from the premises.
479K sat subscribers as of June 30 2024 annual report. They are currently losing around 30K/year. May be under 400K by the time Optus 11 is in service.

I'm asking YOU to define it, not an AI bot. Do u work for Downer?
And u've not addressed my point.

No need for the put-down. I used the term after the Google search, which makes clear what I mean. Comprehend? I had no comment on the rest of your post. Comprehend?
