Looks like the F1 starting this afternoon is being broadcast in 4K. Not sure I’ve seen that mentioned anywhere in the sky announcements?

F1 has simply been shifted to Sky Sport 1 as Ashes isn't on. Sky will not have a 4K feed of F1.

Sky menu definitely says the F1 is on "Sky Sports 1 UHD"

Maybe they do have a 4K stream, no need to shift it to SS1 otherwise

4K streams cost more money and purchase would have had to be preplanned in which case Sky would have mentioned it given they had advised use of a pop up channel if required.

P.S. The pre race is an HD stream.

Have a Sony 83-inch 4k OLED TV. Watched the Aussie V8s on both the "New" 4k UHD channel 1 on Saturday and Sunday on Channel 2 (with the TV doing the built-in upscaling), and TBH could not really see any difference. YMMV of course, subject to TV model, etc

The V8's aren't being broadcast in native 4K? Even though its being broadcast on both the 4K channel and the standard channel, only limited sports will actually be broadcast in native 4K. most other content is just upscaled (and not very well) on the 4K channel. From what Sky have published its only the Ashes for now with the AO Tennis coming in the new year that are actually 4K native broadcasts. I'm sure more sports will be added in time (Premier League would be a prime candidate) but it is very limited for now.

This is from their FAQ. From my own back to back testing their upscaled content is no better than native HD due to compression.

Sport filmed in 4K UHD will play on Sky Sport 1 4K UHD. When a sports broadcast on Sky Sport 1 4K UHD is only available in High Definition (HD), the content will be upscaled for an enhanced viewing experience.

Do they have some sort of marker on the event description to denote full 4k

It says ‘UHD’ next to the sky sport logo when it’s native 4k. The ashes has been 4k only during live play of the game. It switches back to HD for the build up and Lunch/Tea break. Also all of the replays/highlights are HD only on the 4k channel.

Hi

I am noticing the improvement in picture quality with 4K. However, I do wish that they would reduce the brightness of the Sky Logo including the Olympic rings. I have an OLED and it’s probably alright but you do have to be aware of image retention.

Many years ago in the days of Panasonic plasma displays I remember watching a five day Cricket match. It was around the time of the Olympic Games and sky had those rings full brightness. A week later I could still see the bloody rings!

Does updating to the new box, even with their free deal still result in a higher monthly fee? Last time I checked they were charging $15 for recording

Edit: during the upgrade it says this "You currently have My Sky recording on your Sky subscription. Your monthly charge will not change but your recording storage will increase to 1TB on the new Sky Box."

sooo, all good then?

Do we know if the Winter Olympics will be broadcast in 4K on SKY? I don't recall any announcements beyond the Ashes and AO, hopefully we don't have to wait a long time until the next 4K event.
