NonprayingMantis: If more channels go HD I would definiutely need a hard drive upgrade.

If all the crap my wife has on series link becomes HD there will be no room for the good stuff I like to watch.

Recording a FTA HD movie takes up absurd amounts of space at the moment - mostly because the ads seme to meant the movie lasts 20-30% longer than it would on Sky Movies.

Sky is launching a external HDD they are currently working on the name for marketing.

Where did you hear that?

The CRS where asked to submit names for the HDD I was told while sorting out a few issues.

cool thank you. do they have a website so we can submit our names too?

That sounds lame...external HDD

I don't know how big the HDD in the current MySkyHDi box is, but based on the size of HD content and much space it takes up, im gonna go out on a limb and say the HDD's current size is 160GB.

Now that is NOT a lot of space. Surely they can up that, say 1TB :D

1TB drives are so cheap these days, I don't know why they wouldn't offer something that size.

MySkyHDi's have a 320GB drive. Original MySky has 160GB.

Not all of this is available for recording - some is reserved for the PPV movies that are stored locally.

If i sign up now do I get a MySky or a MySkyHDI? I only want to record SD material (as I only have a SD TV), but a MySkyHDI outputs SD too doesnt it?

For the same price, I would want the double sized HDD.

They no longer supply the original my sky units so you would get a my sky hdi, besides they are the same price if you don't sign up for the HD ticket.

For what it's worth I have just received this from sky regarding ESPN HD

Foxtel in Australia has both the ESPN Pacific Rim feed and ESPN HD feed. The quality of pictures they get on the Pacifid Rim feed is the same as we do here in New Zealand. They have purchased rights for ESPN HD and enough bandwidth to broadcast on their network. We are currently operating to full capacity of our satellites and If we were to add another channel then we could not continue bringing in current sporting events. Also the more satellite feeds we purchase and try to bring in at once, reduces the quality of broadcasting to customers. We stand by our previous response where 'the move to HD across the world is a transitional process' and when we are able to purchase more bandwidth for a new channel, we will review whether to obtain rights for ESPN HD. At this time there is still no time frame as to when the Pacific Rim feed will be available to us in HD.

We thank you again for taking the time to email us.

I guess from that response that HD for Discovery, Natgeo, and History are out for this decade..

The Superbowl might not be in HD AGAIN this year. I emailed Sky and got this response

"We are still in negotiations for the rights to air the Super Bowl on our sport channels. If we are unsuccessful in doing so then unfortunately it will be airing in standard definition on ESPN. Please continue to check the EPG (electronic programming guide) to confirm any changes and updates."

at least that's a half decent response.  Dunno why they don't buy some space on D3 for extra HD services, especially if they have the dishes now with the right LNB's on them

Good to see they're trying to get the Superbowl in HD, the ESPN feed is so rubbish.

what gives me hope is that both playoff games tomorrow are on sky sport 1 and are in HD, looking forward to that

They still need the fibre feed from Connecticutt. Not cheap. Then they have to put the prices up to make it worthwhile. What next, fibre feeds from Singapore and Hong Kong for Nat Geo and Discovery.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

why not negotiate to bring them in from Foxtel in Sydney?  Surely they'd have fibre to there already?

as an aside, anyone know why almost all HD content from overseas is only 2 channel, rather than 5.1?  It's quite annoying.
