I like to record the TV News at 6pm for the day's headlines and the weather forecast. I can then fast-forward through the boring bits (usually the adverts and most of the sport reporting). 

 

With the Vodafone TV device this was possible without a satellite dish.  

 

 

 

I haven't got the time or patience to read and understand the existing 43+ pages... what just want to know is... when will anyone provide a suitable recording device that doesn't need a dish?

 

 

I went through the same thought process for the same reasons - but I like recording things off many Sky channels, so after 25 years of cable TV, I bit the bullet and had a dish installed.

 

Our New Sky Box in our house works well enough not to annoy me. YMMV

Hi all, I’ve searched the forum for this problem and can’t see anything. I’m an ex Vodafone TV customer who gas the new Sky box. The box in general is pretty good, a few glitches that I can live with while we wait for updates.
My issue is that the media controls, especially play and pause, are not being recognised when I use my Sony remote control. HDMI-CEC (Bravia Sync) works well for all other controls, but with play and pause I can see that the commands are being passed to the Sky box (the LED flashes on the box) but they are not being recognised. I’ve tried contacting Sky on this and I don’t think they really understand the issue. All other devices attached to the TV respond correctly when I use the TV remote to control them.
Having to use two remotes is threatening marital bliss!

Is anyone else seeing the same issue?

Weirdly our white Sky remote will turn on some tvs we have Sony and Samsung. Will turn on the sky pod.

Will not select the user. We have to do that with the tv remote!

The white remote will pause and play shows on Sky. You need the tv remote to fast forward or rewind.

The speed is glacial to do most things. Except for selecting things on the side menu for the TV shows. That pops up for a millisecond.

The 'back' arrow on the white remote doesn't take you back to a previous channel. Takes you back to the last menu.

The Sky pod also takes around 10 seconds just to initialize to the main profile screen when you turn it on. Slow as a wet week.

Digital quality is awful on lots of the channels and we have been getting wifi drop outs. Never had a single ine in 5 years with VTV.

Clunky. I hope there are some software upgrades.

I don’t think people are in love with more boxes, but there isn’t an internet direct service accessible via device of customer choice available in NZ.

Anyone know the ethernet speed capabilities of the Skypod. I had thought it was a theoretical 1Gbps  I have it connected via a Cat5e run under the house from a new Asus RT-AX3000 router.

 

 

 

Logging into the router I see that it reports that the LAN port to the Skypod has a potential problem. (it shows 100Mbps speed connection). The router suggests the following

 

 

 

1 Make sure cable is 5e or greater.

 

2 Cable could have a lose connection or moisture damage

 

3 Older device might slow it down

 

 

 

I will check the integrity of the cable with a cable tester and replace if needed with a Cat 6 however if the Skypod is only capable of 100Mbps then that is moot. I can't find any information on the technical details of the Skypod

 

 

 

The other LAN port in use by the router goes to a network switch ( which goes to PC/NAS/Camera). This shows 1 Gbps speed. The LAN ports are all capable of 1Gbps.

Update on Skypuck Ethernet speed

 

I have checked the 5e cable and the connections are Ok

 

Doing a "Sky device ethernet speed" google search shows a product called Sky Stream puck (it looks like a VTV box) that is a non satellite box for Sky in UK. 

 

There is a lot of discussion about the ethernet chip in which a maximum 100Mbps. Interestingly there is discussion that a Wifi connection with the box rather than ethernet makes a better EPG performance.

I will try a Wifi connection to test that.

 

 

 

Conclusion

 

I assume that the ethernet chip in the Skypod  is 100 Mbps max and that is all that is needed for streaming the content available from Sky.

10 Mbps would be all you need to stream anything Sky could produce.





Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Thank for comment re speed. Yes at the resolution they are delivering you don't need much :-) 

 

 

 

I don't need more speed just interested to find the maximum speed Skypod could connect with to my router.   

 

 

 

I get 100Mbps on Ethernet using Speed Test app on the Skypod  where as I get 250Mbps with the Wifi from the router with the same app. 

 

 

 

I suppose the Ethernet vs Wifi connection comes down to reliability. There is no other competition for the Wifi channels when the Skypod is in action from within the house. Wifi is 5

 

 

 

I also haven't see any discernable difference with EPG performance between Wifi versus Ethernet  as discussed in link previously posted.

Does the skypod have any memory to buffer? We are trying gto watch over 4G wifi - same way we have always watched VTV? It is just paused, disconnected, can't connect, timing out. There are lots of new neighbours due to biaties out in the harbour for Easter who may be slowing fhe 4G service as we live in Waiheke Channel.

We can paly 3 seconds at most..

You shouldn’t rely on a tv service over 4G.

Well that is what we have used with VTV for 5 years and had five adults working and streaming the entire time. We don't have another choice other than Starlink.

Of the pod doesn't buffer like VTV does we will need to go back to myski and a dish I guess and buy smart tvs.

Well after the usual interminable delays getting anything to 'just work' with Sky, the Sky Pod arrived last week.

 

Not been a great experience, though the (under 6) grandkids recognized the Netflix button and were away laughing, grandmother not so much. The package is not intuitive. At least with VTV and the older Sky devices, pretty much all services functioned using the same buttons, not with the Pod. The older systems, you turned the TV on punched in the channel number and you were there. With the Pod, there's a 10-15 second delay when you turn the TV on and then and extended pause with every button press. A shambolic effort.

 

 

 

It'd be sad to say goodbye to Discovery Turbo and the cable news programs that have been at our fingertips, but I think it's time to put the ChromeCast to more frequent use.

I also miss Discovery Turbo. However, it should be legally available in NZ when HBO launch their new streaming service, which should include all of the Discovery channels. An announcement is due from HBO this week, so that might give a better idea of when it will be available here.

I have a Sky Pod and a Sky Box. Both are wired to the router.

 

A Netflix speed test on the Box shows a result in the hundreds of mbps

 

A Netflix speed test on the Pod shows a result of 87.50mbps
