This might be the first time I've heard of the term "genuine streaming direct to tv service" or "internet direct service" -- what do you mean by this, exactly?

Terminology mainly. Modern TV's connect direct to internet, and there are numerous content boxes around. competing with that lot is hard work - you dont see tvnz or tv3 rushing to build their own boxes anymore - todays world is all about delivery over Internet.

I'd love a really decent app ala netflix or similar, connected direct to Internet. Skygo kinda wants to go there, but it's too constrained and has too many limitations (device installs, concurrent streams etc).

If you have a smart TV with an App on it, your own Google TV, Amazon TV or Apple TV, why not have Sky available as a Pay TV provider? I appreciate thats giving away last metre territory to other companies, but Sky are already halfway there using a modified Google TV.

In 2023 the proliferation of really good alternative devices is awesome. Even Veon TV's can just about get away with running Apps.

I'm sure someone could figure out how to get Kodi or Plex working to stream the content, but im not interested in that.

I assume that the ethernet chip in the Skypod  is 100 Mbps max and that is all that is needed for streaming the content available from Sky.

I have a Sky Pod and a Sky Box. Both are wired to the router.

A Netflix speed test on the Box shows a result in the hundreds of mbps

A Netflix speed test on the Pod shows a result of 87.50mbps

Interesting...

Speed check using app on Pod with Wifi connection to the Pod from router shows 423 Mbps download (Vocus).

With ethernet to pod connection same app gives about 90 Mbps.

I am leaving the Pod connected with Wifi

The PC in the house is connected with ethernet to router so there is very little competition for Wifi

IMHO, its about the ability to remain. The blah blah blah about Sky as a monopoly was fake, that was about disgruntled people who wanted everything for bugger all. Sky was never a monopoly. NOW... we have that must have competition = sorted. Now people grumble about so many subscriptions that you need to have.

If Sky folded tomorrow, nothing changes. If you want to watch what you enjoy, roll up for x amount of subs.If thats a problem, then you can't blame Sky as it folded, you got the competition that you wanted.

Maybe I've been lucky, but no issues with the Pod so far. It works and does what we want. It's an extra step having to go to the app for TVNZ channels compared to Vodafone rather than just pressing 1 or 2 on the remote but manageable, and different UI and menu to get used to but didn't take long to get the hang of it. Main frustration has been fast forwarding compared to VTV - it's very slow and don't get the preview screens so difficult to time it right. One of my favourite features on VTV that I'm missing was the 20 second skip forward/back which made it easy to go back if you had fast forwarded through ads a bit too far, and very handy with sport when trying to watch a game early before work - I'd use it all the time to skip injury stoppages and replays etc.

Hadn't bothered with a Chromecast before as VTV and PS4/PS5 on the older non-smart lounge TV met all streaming needs other than Spark Sport (which I no longer use now that it's ceasing and my football team are out of European competition for the season), and have a Samsung smart TV in the bedroom. Might now get one for the bedroom next time there's a good special to use Sky Go with it and get Sky content in the bedroom rather than pay for another Pod and ongoing multi room as wouldn't use it enough to justify that.

Keep trying - all doable with preview once you get the hang of it.  But not on the TVNZ+ app, which I'm sure is out of Sky's control.

It'd be sad to say goodbye to Discovery Turbo and the cable news programs that have been at our fingertips, but I think it's time to put the ChromeCast to more frequent use.

HBO announced their new streaming service today. It's going to be called "Max", and it includes Warner Bros content, HBO and the Discovery channels.

It launches in the USA next month, but no word yet as to when it will come to NZ. I guess it depends on when the current licensing agreement with Sky NZ comes to an end, and whether they decide to renew it.

According to this article, the Sky agreement is due to end sometime this year. I guess Sky will fight hard to keep the license, as Neon and the Soho channel could otherwise lose a lot of their content.

Any tip? Just find using fast forward moves very slow and it's more looking at the time than getting the preview screens moving like VTV. Is there another method?

Try tapping the FF button twice. That takes it up to x16 speed, which gets you through a full ad-break pretty quick. Then tap PLAY when you see what you want. For a small jump or back up just tap the FF or RW button once for x4 speed.  Taps only, don't hold down the buttons.

Thanks that's what I've been doing so probably just need to get the hang of it more. We did watch one show off the guide which cut off about 3 minutes before the end (as it had been running late starting with the previous program over-running), so then found the on demand version of it and fast forwarding at max speed seemed to take forever to get the point we were at.

Ads on Sky, email from Sky re the new Sky Box. hmm. Ive had Sky forever, .001% issues. But assuming its "just" a replacement to my Sky HDi, it should be a pull the trigger event, but now not so sure.

April 19 is release date

If they offered a 7 day trial so I can if need be, just switch power, ethernet and HDMI plugs, Id be all in

This is good news for aggregators like Sky

https://www.npr.org/2023/03/06/1161382179/hbo-max-disappearing-shows-series-streaming-warner

Basically Discovery (who own HBO, Discovery etc...) have been pulling shows off their streaming service including their own shows like Westworld, Raised by Wolves. This is to save on residual payments but also so they can sell the shows to aggregators like Tubi and Roku (where the aforementioned shows have reappeared).

+1

I'm not at all unhappy with my MySkyHDi box.
I love having F1 back on Sky with the ability to really easily (pause rewind re-watch), (pause rewind re-watch in ½-speed slow motion) something I thought I saw.
Failing a 7 Days Free Trial - 14 or 30 days would be better - I'll wait until a few brave souls on Geekzone have tried the new white box and decreed it better than the old black box before I take the plunge.

Think the pod will be on sale from next week too?

Or just the skybox?

The SkyPod does NOT seem to support TVirl app,  does anyone know a workaround or if it is possible to sideload?

I am trying some last ditch things before returning it; the following things are showstoppers:

  • TV1/TV2 not integrated with the rest of the channels

    • They can be viewed in the TVNZ+ app but the quality is poor, and there is no live pause/rewind/restart. And it's not my connection since VTV always showed TV1 in crisp HD and 5.1 sound.
  • The user interface is dreadfully slow, it can literally take 10 seconds for any response to pressing a button on the remote. This is unacceptable and IDK how it ever got through development signoff.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be any alternative device that offers live pause and rewind   (the SmartVU products don't).
