Theclaytons: I’m with 2degrees.

Spark sport is fine, Netflix is fine, Prime video is fine, Neon is fine. Sky Sport Now is crappy…..

Not sure what to make of that?

Apple TV4K. Removed app, wiped data, same issue.

Thats funny - I was about to suggest them for a provider I've found gives very consistent bandwith :O - I guess not.

I'm with a crowd called DTS who do commercial / business connections. I've always found the bandwith very consistent and its generally going to be less busy weekend and evenings (aside from business backups and data movement)

I had some issues watching the rugby with it going very blocky a few times a few weeks back but I find SSN very reliable, especially since I switched to Apple TV vs running it in a browser on my NUC connected to the TV.

I also watch via an apple tv and have found recently that watching super rugby or NRL that the field seems very blocky in wide shots. This is extremely hard to watch. Can anyone suggest how to fix this or is it simply the broadcast quality?

This is running using an Ethernet connection @ more than 300Mbps and a ping of 2ms.

On the Apple TV, force close the app (double press the home button and swipe up on the SSN app. Then go to settings, general, storage and delete SSN app from here as well.

Then reinstall.

Made a difference for me.

No. I assume you are currently using a device that will become unsupported?

Ive got Sky, I got SSN for a month to have a look. F1 quality was fine, the issue isnt frame rate its missing frames giving a juddery experience. The cynic tells me that if SSN was primo, many would dump the satellite

My test was ages ago, seems like nothing has changed, and given that other stream services work great, its a marketing strategy

I find with Apple TV that the video quality for rugby is as good as the broadcast 99% of the time. Until recently I watched in a browser on PC and the second I switched to Apple TV was a huge step up.

Its almost as if the stream is different - Its like they have gear encoding a stream specifically for Apple TV. It could just be Apples decoder and render is better but it seemed like a lot more than that. The motion got smoother and there are far less artifacts.

I used to find as soon as they zoomed out the field looked dreadful and blocky - Low motion closeups looked amazing but as soon as there was a lot of change in the video so a higher data rate was required it got bad.

I find the same with TVNZ ondemand (TVNZ+) and 3 now - They are both a million times more watchable on Apple TV than they were on browser. On browser it was like you were zooming something less than SD up to full screen and it was bad. Apple TV looks pretty damn close to broadcast - It will be a lower data rate but I'm picking they are using 265 and its damn good. Plus as a bonus TV3 don't seem to have worked out how to block skips in add breaks so you can jump through the ads on Apple TV.

I'm not an Apple fan boy - Can't stand the Desktops/Laptops but love my iphone and ipad and Apple seem to know how to do good video. I'd love to know if they get specialty equipment to endode at the other end ready for apple TV as it certainly looks amazing.

I haven't watched any motor sport on it to speak of and there will be a higher data rate required to keep F1 smooth so I'll have to have a look but Rugby for me is clearer than when we had Sky on UHF.

What setting do you have the Apple TV on for video HD or SD? . I have newer one and it’s still really blocky and quite dark resolution

I do have a 2017 Panasonic, but not one from the list. (58ex730)

I guess the takeaway for everyone is an update is happening on the 12th that would seem to effect everyone 🙂

I've only got the Apple TV 4 - Resolution is set to 1080p and I haven't picked any video quality setting anywhere.

I've gone from having Sky on UHF when you still could with one of the later encoders where it did 720p (maybe??) which I was happy with. Then I went to using Sky on demand (from a mates sky sub, as you do) and at the time that was garbage - Watchable but rubbish.

Then I went to Rugbypass via a VPN - I love the platform and assuming I had a reliable VPN link to the country of origin it was close to flawless.

Next I went SSN on Chrome browser on an Intel nuc i5 so its possible the stock Intel video drivers for decoding was sub optimal but it was as good as Rugbypass (excluding the ability to start a game at the start while its already playing)

Then I got the Apple TV and I've never looked back - I've probably have one game that went blocky quite a few times and might have actually paused and buffered once but that could easily have been my providers backbone having issues. Most times I can watch a game on friday or saturday night and its flawless. I had one game that I tried to start 30 minutes in and skip back to the start and it glitched big time - No matter what I did it jumped to the prior rugby match - Played for 1 minute and stalled at the same point - I think that was SSN not linking the video to the guide correctly as a couple of hours later I could watch it delayed without and issues.

I'll be watching the final (Obvioulsy) on Saturday night so I'll have to concentrate more to make sure I'm being critical and not overlooking flaws as acceptable but I've been really happy with the service.

I really hope they do upgrade SSN as my half price 12 month satellite contract runs out in December and I'll have to switch to something for a few months before I can re-join.

Everyone seems to do this with Sky - Join on a special, cancel it and then re-join on special. I had someone talking about a guy who worked for the telemarketers and people had his mobile number and would ring him to get the deal. Often you only had to cancel for a month and the marketing company could get you the deal.

Why don't Sky just charge a reasonable price and they'd find their customer base would increase.

I rang them to ask if they had deals for SSN - When the guy said no. I asked about buying it through the App store - That means they pay Apple a 30% commission. He didn't care so I ended the call with "Fine, I'll sign up through apple so they get richer".

Why don't they do a deal where its cheaper to sign up direct than via the App store?

To summarise my Rant:

Sky Sport NZ Suck and most of their customer base pay them relucatantly.

Sky's UHF service was 4:3 ratio standard definition, 576i. HD, 1080i, only became available on satellite service in 2008.

I had one of the later decoders I had in my head had HDMI out but thinking back it was probably component. It certainly gave a clearer picture but you'll be right.

I had it hooked to a Hauppauge card with an IR sender that let me record to a PC back in the day.
