jtbthatsme: What I am saying that government should not be funding an initiative that encourages growth for a company who already has no competition.

TVNZ is funded by the Government

Since when?

and the Igloo idea is also going to include more taxpayer money to make it free for some people (under certain criteria) or at least for the set top box.

igloo is an opportunity for tvnz to make a bit more money. As the govt is the shareholder in it that should make you happy.

I think he means it is state owned, and was propped up by state funding in the past..

I like the MySkyHD, it works well. It's worth the $18.70/month for the peace of mind knowing that if it breaks, it's replaced at no charge (unlike owning a Tivo). I have had a MySky from day one, but ditched the basic service when I discovered (whispers) downloads.

It's all very well for them to hike their price again, like they do every year (sometimes twice), but please ease up on the rubbish statements like "we've added more channels" - sports package costs more anyway, so does soho. what else have they added? 20 more PPV channels?

Im dropping sky as well in the next few weeks, we very rarely watch it and another price rise for no perceived gain (for us anyway) kinda grates. Yes its only $2 a month but in this climate it's really on the nose. The "letter" justifying it doesn't gel well with us either.
I'd rather sink the money into a vpn and download/stream all the good stuff, aided by the doubling of data we have received from our isp.

As others have said its the specious arguments they trot out that gall. I would respect SKY more if they simply said "we are putting up the price because we're a monopoly and we can, so we can make more profit".
A few years ago the main argument was always "we buy our programs in US$ and with the decline in the NZ$ our prices have increased and we have to pass them on......"
Don't hear that argument anymore and I wonder when the decreases due to the improving NZ$ will get passed on. So now it's bs about more channels and cost of the Olympics coverage.
Perhaps we should just buy shares and bank the dividends(which were increased this year)!

For all those saying people shouldnt complain, we can cancel etc. Well I'm not so sure that we have a choice of service in this country.

I have been a long term sky subscriber but don't watch anything except live rugby league. I have perfectly usable Apple TV / Netflix setup at home for entertainment and I get much better value for money. Unfortunately for a sports fan I have no choice but to absorb this increase for a service I under utilise just to watch live coverage of my favourite game.

After giving this alot of thought, I think I will cancel and listen to live radio and watch the replays on prime. Its just not worth $75 - $80 per month.

The crying shame is that there is no alternative for sports fans so we have no choice. I do understand that rugby league income is driven by TV rights but this doesnt make me feel any better! And yes, I do go to Warriors games live so use sky for away games.

They aren't. It's TVNZ making a commercial decision. TVNZ != Government

TVNZ is funded by the Government

Nope - TVNZ is funded by advertisers. Actually, given the ongoing dividends it pays, it's more accurate to say that TVNZ funds the government than that it is funded by the govt.

Pretty sure that's wrong too - and that any direct taxpayer subsidy for igloo box installs has been explicitly ruled out by the govt.

If i wanted my wages to be spent on lining Sky TV's pockets I would have Sky TV so [...]

Umm... it's not your wages, it's an investment capital off TVNZ's balance sheet (if I understand the proposal correctly), they expect to make a commercial return on the investment. Actually, if they make money on it and pay an ongoing dividend to the shareholder as a consequence, they will fund the govt's coffers rather than drain them. Like I tried to say before, you need to distinguish between operating costs and capital investments, they aren't the same thing.

Meanwhile over at Freeview, more channels have been added but the subscription remains the same... No choice but to cough up if you're addicted to sport.

FYI 10% of revenue comes from Government funding sources.

Dynamike: This would have been a more honest letter to send:

"Dear Stock Unit

We increase the cost of our subscriptions every June. This year will be NO exception.

We are working hard to decrease the value you get from our services.

We have reduced the number of channels available to our basic customers. This includes Triangle Stratos. This trend will continue with the removal of TVNZ 7 at the end of June.

As programming is purchased in US Dollars, the cost to us of purchasing programs has reduced. We have decided to pass these benefits on to our shareholders rather than to our customers.

We have increased the advertising content on most channels. We intend to continue adding more advertising content over the next twelve months.

Our iSky service continues to hold the Internet rights to our programming. This ensures competition from rival companies will not occur using the new UFB platform.

We have finally added closed captions. We should have done this since day one, but we really don't care about deaf people.

Sky Television
Propaganda Department"

Awesome... had a good laugh

I wonder if Fyx will make them think twice next time they put the prices up. Nah never mind - I realised it was a stupid thought as soon as I'd typed it!
