I just received a letter from Sky informing that they are increasing their monthly charge by $2.18 per month.  See below:

Sky can add 5 DEDICATED channels to the Olympics but can't figure out how to broadcast Formula 1 qualifying live in detriment of a replay of a rugby game? I hope I never meet the person who does Sky Sports' programming.

Which subs package are you on?  Wondering if it will affect me on the family pack (no sports and no movies).

I think they need some competition. You don't see ISPs increasing their prices, infact quite the opposite.

"over the past year we added more channels"

Yes, and they make you pay an extra $10 a month for them. So, this is a nonsense statement.

Also, I've watched Discovery in the US and it had much better content than what we have here.

It is like we get the worst of the worst.

Sky simply increase prices each year and put out a blurb to justify it.

Sky posted net profits of $62.6 million for the last 12-month period - a 3.8 per cent gain on the previous period. Yet they are hiking the prices again.. they have no shame

I would have thought their costs would have gone down over the last few years due to the NZ dollar being so high, so they can purchase content cheaper from the US.

And there's nothing wrong with that... As a private company they have to keep making as much money as possible.

So unless:

- Genuine content comparable competition turns up or
- The price increases and quality issues cause them to start losing subscribers

They'll keep increasing their prices, because, as a group, that's what their subscriber base is telling them they will put up with.

Good on them I say.

Personally however I have dramatically reduced my spend with them by dropping sports and the HD ticket due to their total lack of clue over all motorsport in general, and F1 specifically.

Cheers - N

Sky cancellation confirmed for the end of our 12 month contract.

We got the half price deal for 12 months and probably have about 5 months left.
We've been in two minds if we should continue with it after the 12 months or cancel.
This price increas has just made that decision for us.
Thanks Sky!

Totally agree. But some more competition would help, as without competition people don't have a choice where they get their live rugby from in NZ. But I think it is probably an older business model now, as more tv content will be delivered online, where there is likely to be far more competition.

They are being silly. They have the highest rate of subscriptions they have ever had, due to the RWC, and people haven't removed their access or anything after RWC finished. Price increases always make customers assess the value. They WILL lose money as a result of this price increase.

Entirely silly decision.

I only have Sky for Food TV anyways.

I don't think so. They will lose a few customers, but as you also said, there's a lot of behavioural inertia - if most people kept their rugby channel / sports package / HD ticket / whatever after the RWC finished, how many are _really_ going to cancel over $2.18 per week?

Answer - almost certainly less (in terms of $$$) than the additional revenue they make from the people that stay.

Cheers - N
