kiwifidget: I read somewhere about an upcoming feature where you can go backwards a week in the EPG to watch something you missed. Great idea but when is it coming?

It's here now, but on Freeview Plus, not a sky service.

Thanks for clearing that up. Though Sky should still offer that feature as I dont want another set-under box cluttering up the cabinet.

networkn: I like knowing what's coming up. I don't pay any attention to the Magazine or generally look for what's on Food TV, the only way I know is the promos.

They could put the promos in between programs, then those that want to watch them can, without bothering others.

And if someone wants constant promos without any programs last I looked so might have changed, channels 0 and 28 the preview channels.

Unlike most people in this thread, I'm broadly happy with the range of content on Sky (they do pretty much bring in the pick of programming from around the world) and also with their pricing (good content isn't cheap, and they do have hefty costs to keep things running). So, I'm pretty happy on that front.

However, lest people think I am beating a drum for Sky, I assure you I'm not. The service sucks, big time, and for some months I have been on the cusp of dumping it (and have the GF pretty close to agreeing).

What is bugging me is the lengths they go to to gratuitously annoy me. Worst of all is the accursed advertising/promos. If they want to keep me, and have me pay circa $100 a month for the programming, then they need to stop the interruptions. Outside of SoHo and the Movies channels, pretty much none of the channels are watchable. There's some good stuff on the Zone, but the constant interruptions make it unwatched - I don't want my train of concentration interrupted every 7 minutes to fast forward through the same recurring wall of promos.

There are a couple of more minor niggles that fade into insignificance beside the huge annoyance of the advertising/promos, and I also wish they would:
- drop the logos, or at least move them well into the corner of the screen and make them less obtrusive
- get the data rate up on some of the channels, the level of compression is excessive and the picture quality consequently terrible
- stop converting 60hz material to 50hz, it degrades the picture quality

Once I find the time to finish my network rebuild, then a VPN with iPlayer, Lightbox and Netflix (all regions) piped to all TVs in the house should be feasible. And if Sky hasn't eliminated programme interruptions by then, they will be dumped. For the odd high-profile sports game I want to see (eg some RWC) then meeting friends at the pub is a perfectly acceptable option.

How about letting me pay only for the one channel I watch - as quite literally I am paying the base price for one channel.

Which channel?
And how many hours do you watch?
Can you get that channel offering from other sources (Netflix, Lightbox, etc)?  And if so would you watch other programs that the alternative has?

Whats the Cost Per Viewing Hour (CVPH) on each offering?

Falloutboy: The Zone.

Okay.  I watch 11 hours of Zone and Soho per week.  The cost including MySky+ is $79.22 for my 44 hours or $1.80 per hour in SD or $2.00 per hour in HD.
Thats pretty comparable to buying the episodes via iTunes or such.  Some eps are not available in NZ so I figure I'm getting the first run viewings on a timely basis at pretty reasonable prices.  Others may have a different view.

Are the series that you watch available on other streaming services?  Use something like LemonTV to find out where its available.

TBH I have no idea what streaming providers may have I just know that the only channel I watch is the zone and I am presently waiting to see is Killjoys - I own everything else they have played thus far.

They could completely shut down for all I care. I've never subscribed to Sky in all the time it has been available in NZ.

Really helpful contribution on the topic.  Thanks.

Perhaps you could suggest what they could do better such that you might consider subscribing?

Yeah, tricky that one.  Killjoys isnt on anyone elses playlist given it prem'd in Jun.
Have you watched Lost Girl?  Same creator.  Might be of interest.

Nah not my cup of tea, no Zombies, Aliens or Space features.

Walking Dead - Which I own.
Fear The walking dead ( but i wont pay for soho ) AFAIC it's sci fi and doesn't belong on soho.
Babylon 5 - Own it
Dr Who - Own it.
Firefly - Own it.
Alien - you name it - own it.
Battlestar Galactica old and new - own it.
Star wars... same again.
and so it continues.

It's easier to list what I don't own, I was hoping for more but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to SCI-FI, I do know there's some stuff coming up I'm interested in checking out.

Funny - I can understand FTWD being on Soho.  Quality drama, first run, pulling cable viewers in the US = Soho.  Zombies or no zombies is quality drama.  Penny Dreadful in the same bucket.  If Soho had been around when TWD came out I could see it there.  And then played on Zone at the end of the series (much like Orphan Black).

I cant understand why you wouldnt pay $2.50 a week (or an episode if you watch nothing else on Soho) - thats less than a cup of coffee - to watch FTWD.
