Netflix supply their own CDN gear to ISPs in a content neutral way as they are big enough to justify it.
Neon, Lightbox, TVNZ, Mediaworks (TV3/Four etc), SkyGo and I suspect FanPass all use Akamai. As they are the only other player in town that do CDN delivery at scale. So the companies pay Akamai to deliver content which is a non trivial expense.

Why would you want to deliver TB/s on hosted hardware in AWS when you can send hardware to ISPs to deliver the content.
Sure their central servers may be on AWS. But that's just authorising the content and the APIs and website probably represents % 1 of their total traffic.

I left Sky last November. No regrets at all. (I must admit however, one good thing about Sky is their MySky recorder - that worked very well indeed).

For me, it wasn't the cost, but the programming.... so out of date, low picture quality, and constant interruptions for adverts (many of them unnecessary self-promotion). Even their own music channel wasn't consistent. Constantly changing music styles - no stability - and Standard Definition - even for recent music clips! And don't get me started with programmes like Judge Judy... out of date, 4 sets of ads over 30 mins (Yes, 4 sets including the ads between programmes), and Standard Definition quality when the programme was originally recorded at a higher quality. Even the Simpsons were repeating within the same week - and there are over 500 episodes available - you don't need to repeat the same episode for years, let alone in the same week!

Arrrrh, I finally reached breaking point and cancelled.

And what a joy! Now... having explored alternative options, we enjoy recent programmes, advert free, and in HD. Still at a time of my choosing.

Goodbye Sky, and goodbye Freeview (just as bad). In fact goodbye live TV (for the most part)!

I'm not qualified to pass judgement on this but it looks to me like just another mini-pc with Kodi. Not sure what it offers to justify the price. I had to swap my mini-pc (admittedly a cheap Chinese job) with a full one because the limited CPU and RAM couldn't cope with the load. Regardless of the computer you use, if you just load Kodi on it then you probably have whatever this gives you, plus a few hundred dollars left over.

For that amount you could get something a bit more grunty like an Intel NUC or a Gigabyte Brix, I would think. My Minix Neo Z64 Windows box is similarly specced to the Streamsmart and it cost me $220NZD.

On first look US$ I assume 340 to 449 for "StreamSmart is a smart TV box that streams in HD with no monthly fees or contracts. The StreamSmart receiver will give you access to movies, TV shows, live sports, live streams of your favorite TV channels, and 3D movies all in HD!"

Thats cheap. A one one off cost. Nice. But? Nothing is free

To me, SkyTV are the Darth Vaders of the viewing universe. My neighbour quit them last year. So after 6 months they phone him back and offered him Sky basic for $20 a month and a discounted Sky Sport. Foolishly I thought that after 15 years of loyal service that they might offer the same to me. NO WAY! So I quit and 6 months later they offered me the same. But by then I realised (as did my neighbour) I no longer enjoyed or wanted SkyTV. The programming was old, the customer service was worse than poor. And the money grabbing arrogance of their Neon and Soho channels is such a "Wolves of Wall Street" attitude.

And if there's a really important game we no longer feel the need to hide away in isolation. We pop up to the local RSA, enjoy a meal, and watch the game in the company of friends.

I encourage all to liberate themselves from the darkness of SkyTV and transport themselves into a fresh new world of viewing habits.

Its a business. Why did you have Sky if the content wasn't what you prefer? You should have gotten rid of it ages ago by the looks of it.

Deals for new subscribers is not a Sky only scenario.

Maybe they should pay for the rights of Soho and Neon content and give it away? Or include it and charge everyone extra?

Fair call if you ditched Sky, I have too, but best to be rational

I had the same experience - saw the awesome $50 a month offers for the same services I was paying $120 a month for.

Emailed SKY, asked what they would offer to us as customers who had been there for the last 10+ years - received boilerplate response that did not address my question.

Replied again, was offered rialto free for 4 weeks. Total value something like $20.

Cancelled SKY.
