The measat3a satellite was moved to the 160E position a few months ago, its in use already and most of the Australian traffic has moved over to it. However the footprint from it isn't really ideal for NZ only converage as the fixed ku band beams were designed to cover Indonesia or Malaysia.

If they manage to configure usage for Sky NZ there are other issues. For starters the LNBF skew is way out compared to Optus so would still require a tech visit to adjust it.

Optus D3 at 156E was always supppose to be the backup for SKY NZ hence many installs of those twin head lnbfs.

Then of course there are all those Freeview installs as well. Perhaps 2024 we will finally see a deal with Freeview for Sky to turn off encryptions on 1,2,3 ETC..

Does Optus D3/10 have enough space for Sky NZ?

Interesting that it is suggested that Optus have two options for Sky.

D3 has 8 transponders that can do the NZ beam as its similar to the original D1. One NZ beam transponder is already linked to the NZ sky box. The sky box will look there by default if the box loses signal. As part of the bootup process.

The NZ beam is also used for various Sky related sports  feeds

This just in:

Sky will run a 4K Ultra High Definition test during the broadcast of the All Blacks v Australia match on Saturday 28 September, 6pm.

All Sky Sport customers with the new Sky Box will also be able to watch the match in 4K-UHD on a temporary pop-up channel, Sky Sport 1 UHD (channel 251).

So satellite only - not streaming (eliminates the Pod, Sky Go, & Sky Sport now).  Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

That's quite cool. Shame I don't have the new box. I should probably go and look into the new Sky box and see if it's finally better overall?

Hope we eventually see 4K for Sky Sports Now.  I don't need the rest of the Sky curated content but I do need Sports and having watched the F1 and EPL recently, you can see the upscaling on the 4k TV but the quality is good on my 1080p laptop... Now F1TV Pro uses a higher bitrate which helps the upscaling on the TV but native UHD would be much better!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

IMHO it would only be worth it if Sky provides it at a good enough bitrate -- but given what they've done in the past with their existing services it's more likely they'll just make the bitrate so low you it looks awful despite the higher resolution. I've seen 1080i broadcasts from SKY looking worse than high bitrate 720p on other services.

But 99% of the general population think the resolution is the sole determiner of pix quality and don't care about bitrate -- and SKY is exploiting that easily. People will just see 'UHD' in the corner and think they have the best quality. SMH.

Tempting... But for a one off at this stage I'll stick to my HDi box.

The Bitrate from SKY Sport UHD 1 when testing over the past few months has been 25mbits. But havn't looked at it for a few weeks.

I do not subscribe to Sky Sports, so I can not actually view Sky Sport 1 UHD.  But when I ran my TS Analyzer program on the stream, it reported as HEVC video at 115 Mbit/s.  Sky Sport Pop-up 3 channel on the same transponder is reported as H.264 at 44 Mbit/s.

Sky's prices are a reflection of their costs. They aren't making outrageous profits by any stretch.

Then to me it says they should be cutting costs.

I believe they will be able to make some large cost savings when the next rugby rights are up for renewal with NZR, they last paid around $500 million for 5 years in 2019 when currently they are probably only worth half to 2/3rds of that price given rugbys decline in NZ.
