allstarnz:
as an aside, anyone know why almost all HD content from overseas is only 2 channel, rather than 5.1?  It's quite annoying.

to answer my own question....
it seems it's not available to Sky Yell, which is a bit odd really...

NzKaizer: That sounds lame...external HDD

I don't know how big the HDD in the current MySkyHDi box is, but based on the size of HD content and much space it takes up, im gonna go out on a limb and say the HDD's current size is 160GB.

Now that is NOT a lot of space. Surely they can up that, say 1TB :D

MySkyHDi's have a 320GB drive. Original MySky has 160GB.

Not all of this is available for recording - some is reserved for the PPV movies that are stored locally.

I read soemwhere that around 50% of capacity is reserved for the 'ondemand/ppv' stuff.

Is there any way to turn that off and free up the extra capacity because I never use the ondemand thingy and my hard drive gets full very quickly.

Yes you are correct, a certain amount of the HDD capacity is reserved for 'On Demand' PPV. As far as I am aware there is no setting you can change to change the amount of HDD taken by PPV content.

You are in fantasy land if you think Sky CSRs understand technical aspects of satellite transmission or even their own decoders. Get real.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Sheesh, I wouldn't believe a word that Sky CSR's tell you. There are other threads in this forum that you could research to verify my post. How do you suppose that Sky On Demand works if they don't store the PPV content on the HDD? They even advertise the feature as being better than having to wait for a download.

I would like to see Discovery Turbo added. Also it would be nice if Discovery & Nat. Geo stop replay the same programs over and over

i'd like to see another nz company launch their own paytv service with their own satellites to compete with skytv and give people in nz hundreds of channels.

Sky only rents space on a satelliate it doesn't have its own one. As far as I'm aware even renting space on a satelliate is not cheap at all.

We did have another option for pay-tv being Telstra Cable, but they pretty much got sick of running it themselves, and now just on-sell the sky channels.
