Eva888: I know a senior who is holding on to their box for dear life because he has learnt how to work it and he is tech scared. It was an original black sky box which he can record on for free. He was given the Vodafone TV deal when he signed up for broadband. He switched to paying to Sky when VF ended.

Will he be able to keep his old box and ignore buying the new pod etc or will he e forced to change.

If he has a Sky box and it's working for him he should be ok.

Hi, If you stop the new remote "bluetooth autopairing" with the new box, will the remote continue sending just with IR commands? (Or is the IR limited only to the pairing). There must be lots of us who use IR extenders to control our current Sky boxes (In central inaccessible locations) but will have no control if it's just BT. Has anyone used some sort of BT extender successfully? Any suggestions on solutions appreciated, thanks

I would like to know this as well, I have two other TV's connected to my Sky box and a remote in each room I can use to change channels, hopefully BT will do similar

I've been a customer since 1994 and at the same address for 24 years but only get the $50 off. What gives?

My new Sky box was delivered earlier this morning, less than 24 hours after doing the upgrade request - which is bloody good for an AKL to CHC courier package of any sort.

So, a few first impressions:

Upgrade request, delivery, unboxing experience and set up have all been very good. It does look like Sky have been putting some effort into improving the customer experience (as they should).

The user interface, menu structure and remote control for watching and recording TV is a huge improvement (as it should be, the previous Sky box UI was a decade or two out-of-date).

Being able to add Android apps is great. I now have Kodi running on the box and can now ditch the separate Mi Box and extra remote.

Bluetooth remote means the box can now be hidden away in the cabinet.

However, for those so inclined, there will be plenty to snipe at... e.g. low-res icons, channel change slowness.

On the whole, it's not at all perfect, but I'm pleased with the improvements. (But as others have pointed out, it's now got to where it should have been years ago)

How far away from the box are you when the remote stops responding?

Seeing as you asked, I've just had a go to see. It was still working fine from over 10m away, in another room around a corner, pointed back through some brick walls.

@robertsona Thanks for your early impressions review.  Couple of questions about sluggishness if I may.

  • How responsive is the user interface in comparison to the old MySky?
  • You mention channel change slowness ( assuming this pertains to satellite channels as opposed to streams), again how does this compare to changing channels on the old one?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Overall user interface responds well, certainly better than the old MySky. It behaves pretty much like any other Android TV device.

The channel change is definitely a bit slower. It's not like there's a delay after you press a button before anything happens, it's just the time for the new channel to actually start playing.

You should be able to pair more than one remote via bluetooth as it's just another BT device as far as the android TV operating system is concerned, but I doubt Sky are planning to offer additional remotes at this stage.

Having said that, if your TV is recent then HDMI-CEC does work pretty well. I often pick up the TV remote instead of the Sky remote and most functions work just fine.

For those who have mentioned the sluggishness. I have had the Sky Pod for I guess a month now, and there's been considerable improvement in the interface responsiveness in that time. It's still not as responsive as the old Vodafone TV box, but it's clearly got further room for improvement. Sky have pushed through at least 3 updates that I'm aware of in the time we've had it, so I would expect similar frequent updates to happen across both the Pod and the Box going forward.

Lastly, for those talking about wanting to use IR extenders, hopefully the bluetooth range is acceptable so you don't have to go down that route. I was initially quite sceptical of using voice controls, but a recent update means using voice to search now includes sky programming as well as the apps, and this has made a huge difference to how we find on-demand content to watch.

We paid upfront for the HDi when it first came out and had it well before then but are also just getting the $50 discount. I doubt their records are wonderful.

We don't use the box anymore and instead go through MediaPortal. I'm pretty sure if we get one of these that it will break that ability. It will take a while before we're comfortable using Sky's hardware again.

My Sky box is in the middle of the house, with a lot of walls between it and the road. I have just gone and stood in the road - over 20 metres from the box - and the remote works fine from there. I suspect that range won't be an issue for many, and remote extenders may not be required.
