You wouldn't think there are any development expenses in switching back to what they previously offered.

It depends - why did they make the change in the first place?
Its not a popular one - in fact it has generated a lot of flak (as you can see from this thread) so why do it in the first place?

To cut costs?  To deliver a new feature?

At the root of it, I believe the reason for the change from 24 hour history to 6 hour history was a side-effect of enabling digital ad insertion, and was a limitation of the platform provider they being used, not Sky themselves.
To get Ads in stream, they needed to cut down on the replay window.
The promise was that with the limit to the 'rewind', there would be more 'saved titles' to watch.  Anecdotally from this thread that hasn't eventuated.

So if they are 'restoring' the rewind maybe the underlying platform has been upgraded?

In any case, it isn't just a case of 'flip the switch back to the way it was' because they will still want the ad insertion feature active.

I don't understand the ad insertion feature for a rewind function? I get it for a saved replay that might be watched days or even weeks later but for a 24hr rewind feature?

Are the ads that played live 12hrs earlier no longer relevant?

I wasn’t aware they were inserting digital ads now? Must have missed that. What pisses me off is that that last thing I watched was an all black game in november. since then I’ve paid $50 a month for December and January and watched nothing until the first normal season Crusaders game in last weekend. I’m paying $50 a month to watch 4 rugby matches most months and on Saturday my stream in the app on an Apple TV that has previously been flawless kept stopping with a spinning wheel, sometimes going back 30 seconds would restart the stream but would instead go live, in the end I stopped the app, restarted the Apple TV completely and went back in and it played ok for the rest. That could potentially been an iOS issue as to be fair it’s generally a pretty flawless experience on Apple TV (the browser from a nuc had worse quality and more bugs). Essentially I’m paying $12.50 per super rugby match which doesn’t seam like good value when I watch the entire season (Canterbury games) for a product that is mostly good but when they have definately had issues they just say “it must have been your wifi” when it patently wasn’t. Unfortunately the monopoly they have gives them the power to care for their shareholders while holding their clients in contempt. It would be nice to deal with a more client focussed organisation but I can’t see that happening in NZ any time soon. If other companies bid for sport here it’ll probably just fragment the market more and I’ll likely be paying one service for super rugby and a different one for the Allblacks international tests.

Sky Satellite isn't going away, the older customer prefer it, its less hassel and a better user experioence for linear content. Hybrid is the way to go for the next 5 year at least.

they are doing IP based set top boxes for full sky subscriptions now though. They should be able to provide the same end user experience with an Ethernet connected STB.

I took that to mean they were attempting to move clients off satellite. It’s never going to happen short term though.

Of course, she doesn't say it's been implemented, just that they are bringing it back.

When I went back for more confirmation, a 'Selena' said "We are still waiting on the feedback that was given with regards to getting the 24 hour Playback.", I then showed her what 'Nita' had said and she replied with "I am aware of what Nita has advised, at this stage we have to wait on a date as to when this will be available."

It sounds like a decision has been made, but they're waiting for the implementation date.

You wouldn't think there are any development expenses in switching back to what they previously offered. I'm sick of feeling like I'm subsidising their Satellite expenses even though we don't need them. Yes - They'll have had dev costs but they offer online Sky for satellite subscribers anyway so that expense is shared.

I know for me if I lived rural and couldn't get good broadband I'd pay for Starlink to get good broadband and then get IPTV SSN to watch my sport so I get the other benefits of decent broadband vs a bunch of BS channels. Surely satellite TV for Sky is a dying product? Do many sky subscribers actually watch the plethora of garbage history channels etc??

I have an IPTV service which is great, 4k feeds from various channels etc, but the only reason I really have Sky for is the ability to watch something on demand or 'watch from start' when something has started, and really only for English Premier League.

The rest of the stuff I want to watch, NRL, A-League, cricket etc I can usually organise my time to get in front of the box to watch to live, and even though I love my Premier League, side no-way these days am I getting up at 3am to watch them live.

Sky Sport Now's 30 seconds FF and RW feature bugs me too, if you want to watch the previous ball of a cricket game or especially the play in NRL, Football etc, 30 sec's is an eternity. Why not 10secs like every other streaming service around?

The final paragraph of this article https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/360587376/sky-sport-now-rises-price-monthly-and-annual-passes describes the impending return of 24-hour live catch-up as a "new feature allowing users to catch up on live sport from the past 24 hours."

This will be the third consecutive year with a $5/month (10-11%) increase. At that price I won't be resubscribing to Sky Sport Now even when 24-hour catch-up resumes.

Incredible of them to increase the price for SSN to $54.99 a month when you can get Starter and Sky sport on the new box for $55 a month currently. A MUCH better product

So they remove a well regarded feature. Then add it back to soften the blow of a price increase. Happy it is returning but what a dog of a company

"Additionally, the platform is set to introduce a new feature allowing users to catch up on live sport from the past 24 hours."

Stuff:  Don't you mean re-introduce an old feature?

+$15 for recording functionality if you choose the white box. Or no extra charge for the Skypod. 12 month contract too. I suppose SSN will increase again at that time

Don't see the future need for recording if you can get everything on demand (which sky seems to be pushing the box more towards)

Not everything is on demand on the box. Same issue everyone has been facing with SSN 24 hour playback

Oh for sure, but if it improves overtime then there will be less need for recording, particularly at that premium.
