Look - I am no apologist for Sky but this is no commerce commission outrage matter either.

It seems that Sky attempts to support a wide variety of devices (smart tvs of various brands and models with varied capabilities), Apple TV devices, Android, iOS, Android TV, gaming consoles... ) and people's experiences have therefore varied. Whether that is a wise strategy from Sky is debatable - it is obvious that some devices have had and continue to have teething issues, some unresolved.

Throw in general issues people have with streaming and home networks and varied expectations, and I can see why people have become frustrated.

In my case I found when casting to my Gen2 Chromecasts directly after the version upgrade;

  1. the live TV feeds were fine

  2. the replays were jittery and unwatchable. And it took Sky hours after the event to post EPL replays, so they were not available when I wanted to watch them.

  3. the 24 hours catch-up feature did not work, so it could not compensate for the replay problems.

So I upgraded one of my Chromecasts to a Gen4 - model. Now the app is running as an Android-TV app, the experience was transformed - all features now worked. I recognised a Gen2 Chromecast was probably due for a refresh, and just sucked it up.

I am down $100 for a new Chromecast, I am paying $40/month where Spart-Sports was $20/month, and the timing of the upgraded version (after the start of the EPL season and in the midst of All-Black tests) was unfortunate - but it all now works satisfactorily for me, the new features are welcome, and I am not outraged by the experience

Since then Sky has done something else and my Gen2 Chromecast now DO play replays fine (but the 24-hour catch-up still plays the live channel).

So in summary I don't think Sky have covered themselves in glory. But this is not a "storm the citadel", demand refunds and report to the commerce commission situation.

Really! After highlighting all those faults you say it’s not bad. Hahaha. Tell that to try people trying to watch replays. Oh and have you noticed the feeds on the football channels are better. Good if you are a football fan I guess

This is only a small part of the problem.

If only the backend product was up to modern standards..

Spark Sport is now basically 10/10. It also had teething issues. Technology can be complex, the range of devices and user ability is wide.

I am confused. I purchased a week pass on September 3rd via my Apple TV. This morning I thought I would need to buy a pass to watch the cricket and the All Blacks later in the week. But to my surprise I am still connected and today is the 11th! My bank account has only had $19.99 deducted by Apple. When I checked my Skysportnow account payment history it shows four entries for a week pass on Saturday the 3rd. should I worry?

My issue with Sky is that they have misrepresented (and continue to do so) the devices which SSN is compatible with.

I work in mobile app development and know how hard it is to be all things to all devices/platforms, but if they actually said on their website that it is not supported for the platforms x,y, and z then that's fine. At least the customer has the information to decide whether they wish to purchase a subscription or not.

Sky's acknowledgement that there are unsupported platforms which contradicts what is listed on the website and their refusal to offer refunds is contract misrepresentation and that's why it's a ComCom issue.

I use Apple TV 4th generation and its pretty good now. Just over a week ago no matter what program you clicked on earlier in the guide it would end up playing whatever was current - But from the start of that segment. I then switched to my Ipad and it worked and I used Airplay to the Apple TV which also worked well.

Now I can seem to click on anything in the guide and it'll go to the start of that program/segment ok. Its frustrating that I can't seem to skip forward for a little while - The remote control is also a bit iffy. Pausing and then dragging on the touchpad with usually go forward and back but its very twitchy so hard to just go back or forward a little. Clicking the edges of the pad to skip forward and back seems to be hit and miss - It seems to depend on having highlighted the right bit of the controls when you pause first.

Once I'm in and watching a rugby match (Thats all I have sky for) it works well and I can skip through half time. Its generally flawless (or has been for the last few weeks) - My Apple TV is on ethernet connected to 300Mbps business fibre (so 300/300) and on a provider that is busiest during work hours as they specialise on government departments etc.

I hope they don't decide the 4th gen is too old to support and tell people they have to have a 4K to work going forward as its still a capable powerful device.

I haven't tried it on PC for a little while (have a NUC connected to the TV) as the codec quality looks so much better on Apple TV - My folks use it on browser on a NUC and they are complaining of lots of stutters and buffering that never used to happen. They are on fibre but on wifi and only using the average supplied router so not even good modern wifi so it 'could' be that. In another City so haven't popped round but I've suggest a cable under the house and a good AP near the TV as thats more central than the router being in the office near one end. Then they could hard wire the NUC too.

I hope the Apple TV continues to be well supported as its a brilliant platform for On Demand TV too - The quality is superb and the experience of the apps is pretty good. I'm keeping an eye out for a bargain on a second hand Apple TV 4th for the bedroom now but maybe I get a 4K for the lounge and put the 4th in the BR.

I am thinking maybe getting a Chromecast for the BR as we'll always have iphones and Ipads nearby and thats fairly versatile but sounds like a better get the latest Gen - I was just going to get a cheapie as its only a Viewsonic 720p LCD TV in the BR. I guess the chromecast gives me some versatility to take it away and use elsewhere from time to time etc.

Always interested to hear others experiences with the different platforms - I've always used a NUC for its ease of use and it generally works with anything you want to do but of late I've found the various platforms seem to be doing more work on IOS / Android platforms and not sure if its different Codecs / Encoders or decoders but the picture looks so good on Apple TV.

Previously I used to have to call or email to cancel but looking in account now there is a blue cancel button at bottom of active subscription now.

I only have an option to buy no cancel. I am watching it now on the app I’m trying to cancel it on. I’m thinking it was previously an Apple TV subscription but was transferred might give them a call

AFAIK you have to cancel through the website. You can still do it on your phone, but through the website.

Just paid subs to watch champion league in spark sports, unfortunately we live in a monopoly market, despite the money, experience on spark sports is miles and miles ahead of sky sports now!! Picture quality, navigation experience, etc are all way better!
