Kiwifan:

We got our box today, looks good, easy to set up and only 5 minutes to update. I tried to send our previous programmes that we had on our planner through the app but that didn’t work so put them in individually.

Oddly Newshub only recorded 14 minutes and Opal Hunters Red Dirt recorded in nine segments. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? With the old unit it recorded the program in one complete block which I prefer.

Other than that it seems to be going ok, time will tell.

I’ve seen recordings in sections when a firmware update or device restart happens mid recording, haven’t seen more than two sections so far though.

Has anyone had any luck utilising Google Assistant with the Skypod? eg Changing channels etc? i cant seem to get it to respond to any commands via Google Home integration.
I cant even use the remote voice command to ask it to go to a specified channel.

Has anyone had any luck getting it to work with their Samsung TVs One remote? CEC is enabled and the old box used to work well with it. Saves the pain of using...and losing 2 remotes again.

Can we buy SkyPods yet?
I want one for a holiday home so we don’t have to drag a laptop up.
Originally we did have Vodafone tv but when we first got word this was going we got the credit and purchased an outdoor aerial and hooked up to get free to air.

CEC is working, almost completely, with my Sony remote. The Play and pause buttons don't work though, which is a real pain! I've had it a while and can't remember if I needed to turn CEC on in the Sky box. I did make sure that the CEC was detectd by the Sony TV by reviewing the CEC settings in there with the Sky box turned on.

Limited success. The Google Home remote is pretty much useless. There is also a known fault where the remote service on the Sky Pod (Google TV) stops working and is a real pain to get going again. It would be nice if there was an option to use the IR functionality of the remote, much like the VTV did.

Just seems crazy that something as simple as change a channel doesnt work. Makes it completely pointless. Wanted to be able to program Google Home to be able to switch to sport or movies etc upon request but none of that works.
The only Google Asst integration that actually works is the power on and off meaning in the monring it at least starts up and i can watch TV without touching the remote (assuming i left it on the right channel the night before), which was the one thing the Voda TV couldnt do.

They haven't officially launched yet, they've only supplied it to people who were subscribing to Sky via Vodafone TV.

However, they do have at least 1 in stock - I returned mine this week!

It was released prematurely so they didn't have to keep paying Vodafone millions of dollars to keep the vtv service going. Personally, I don't think it's ready yet, the software needs work and it's frustrating to use in its current state. If you get the opportunity, I would hang on for at least a few months until they can sort out the problems.

I agree. In it's present state it's a piece of nearly useless junk. Fortunately, I'm not the one using it but I don't think it'll take long before it gets either sent back or thrown in the bin. The issue with TVNZ channels not being integrated properly is unforgivable in a subscription product. The atrocious quality of the stream from the TVNZ app is borderline offensive.

To be fair, the TVNZ issue is largely out of Sky's control, as TVNZ have not agreed to allow them to stream their channels. TVNZ want Sky to pay them to stream their "free" channels, and not surprisingly, Sky has refused. TV content is already expensive enough without also having to pay extra for "free" ad-supported channels.

I don't think the Pod will ever be a fantastic product, but I suspect that it will at least eventually be tolerable when they sort out the software problems.

Currently, the Sky Pod doesn't support using Google Assistant to control the video player or change/tune the channel. However, you should still be able to search for content, go to the home screen, open apps, and increase or decrease the volume. Hope this helps.

Actually I only want it for SkySports that’s the only thing I need it for.

Thanks for the response.
It doesnt really help as unless its pre-recorded content or Youtube it wont give me access to whats on now. Im hoping this will be a simple update going forward. Given a dedicated Netflix button and a 2 step button to get to any app, the voice option isnt really any faster, nor is the volume control.

I appreciate the integration, just would help if it was usable.

If that's all you want then you are probably better getting an Apple TV or CCwGTV and using SkySportsNow or casting SkyGo if you already have a Sky Satellite subscription at your primary address.

Spyware:

New boxes don't support HEVC. I would guess that Sky will roll out yet another box in 2023 or so to support DVB-S2X HEVC and UHD transmission.

Not too shabby prediction you made 7 years ago! https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=106&topicid=204769&page_no=1#1652332
