Can't quite work out why it is V service going forward.

Vodafone are closing Vodafone TV

A number of Vodafone customers subscribe to Sky content that is delivered via VTV rather than satellite

Sky sees an opportunity to keep those customers especially those do not wish to have a dish ( me) and do not particularly care about recording but liked the VTV EPG abilities

Hence the Sky Pod. I will be buying one as our household wants the Sky Entertainment content and that is the best way to get it. If we needed a dish to get it then we would have discontinued Sky and managed with streaming sites.

The Skybox hybrid is of no interest to me.

Its a V service, you pay them. Thats is going. So, get a Sky Pod, as you say you will, I dont see the issue.

I don't have an issue. Can't speak for others though.

Actually I pay Sky direct - have a Sky subscriber #- for the Sky content since about March (delivered via Vodafone) and have been getting VTV content at no cost since then waiting for the Sky boxes to appear.

I'm pretty sure if you can't tell the difference between Vodafone and Sky, you need a different service.

I am struggling to understand why anyone would want this? Especially with a $200 upgrade fee? Sure there is a bigger drive and you can record more shows at once but this has never really been an issue for me. I am sure most people already have another way of watching other streaming platforms on their TV and those platforms already support 4K and HDR.

I only have SKY for sport and unless SKY start actually broadcasting their content in 4K/HDR (Streaming or Satellite) - then I do not see any point in this new box.

Being 4k-HDR ready has got to be the main draw-card for the box.

I don't think the sky broadcast trucks support 4K yet, but UHD feeds for overseas sport events are already available. Would seem kinda pointless releasing a 4k Box if they arn't going to broadcast stuff in 4k.

Minor draw-cards would be:

  • Bigger hard drive
  • Ability to run the likes of netflix on the box (meaning those without a smart TV no longer need a second set top box.
  • General experience improvements.
  • Non IR remote (no longer need box in line of sight)

Sky is currently replacing the Satellite dish LNB with 4K LNB, looks a lot bigger, had my done last week

I like the idea of a Non IR remote

Is this from the same CEO that canned the old puck they were close to launching(had signed IPTV service contracts then had to pay them out etc) only to produce the exact style thing now?

No. Fellet was pensioned off after Igloo, IPTV no show ($38M?? to be cancelled by next CEO) and also initiating VTV project leaving Voda with the baby in a conspiracy to destroy Sky completely by making it part of Vodafone NZ.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I read somewhere we can keep our current MySky+ unit, I am in the process of cancelling Sky as I only watch the CI channel and it keeps repeating itself, freeview channels I can watch with my integrated freeview TV. Cancelled the Movie channel a few years ago and not interested in Sports.

My Apple TV4 gives me plenty of content and apps and using Plex also.

So next increase from Sky is a goodbye!!

The only thing Sky would be good for now a days is live streaming of Sport, like Spark Sport does, Most current Smart TV's can support this

Long live the Sky!!

That's an expensive channel...

I suspect like many in NZ, my Sky sub pays for international rugby tests, some Super rugby, some flavour of Olympics every 2 years and what cricket doesn't make it on to Spark. Everything else comes via AppleTV (or equivalent - TVNZ on demand has a lot on it, although the ads get tedious).

We will probably keep the old MySkyHDi box anyway as other than (surely!) improved CEC integration so I don't have to walk over and turn the box off, there's not much that would tempt us. We occasionally record shows but can't see a scenario where recording five at once would be worthwhile...

However the dongle/puck might be of interest if we could use it in a second room to get Sky Sport. Multiroom Sky isn't cheap so we have never done it, but this would be a much more elegant solution.

Anyone know if that is feasible? And will they be IP locked or could you take the puck anywhere with broadband?

Cheers

There is no such thing as a 4K lnb. Do you have a photo of it? I wonder if they have gone back to installs of the old backup dual lnbf using 156E.

Mobile Sky would be challenge to their business model if they won't even allow SkyGo subscribers to cast to a large TV, but TV dongles could be associated with a single or a couple of IP addresses I suppose. They would probably be popular with the burgling fraternity however...

CGNAT means that wont work, they would have to discover and chat with each other to know they're in the same location, do wifi locating or other trickery to know if they have been moved. Could also require an app with GPS allowed to control it or many other ways. IP address is not going to do it.

From Sky: "Sky Pod is portable, it can be used on any TV with an HDMI connection (and internet connection). "
