It seems less bad on Chromecast 4K after the Jan 2023 Google patch released today. The remote firmware update in particular. Or, maybe it was just the reboots. Time will tell.

Ok so it's not just me.  I recently upgraded from a Xiaomi TV Stick that was getting a bit unreliable when hot and found the neon app really didn't like the chromecast 4k.  The 'google update' timing doesn't really match, neon was fine on the TV stick up until i stopped using it a month ago. - maybe Xiaomi haven't released the update.

In response to a support ticket they say they are working on a 'hot fix', though in the couple of weeks i think it will have cooled down quite a bit.

There was a Google update in December 2022 which has caused issues for the Neon app. We have tried fixing and Google have made more recent updates but unfortunately it’s been unable to be resolved at present.

For a better experience, if you use the Back button to exit out of the Neon app after you’ve finished watching a show or movie you may see some improvement with the slow loading.

When will it be fixed?

We have an interim hot fix the team are working on that we hope will be ready in the next couple of weeks. However because the root cause of the issue is due to incompatibility with a Google setting, we will be completely rebuilding the Neon app to fix these issues and provide an overall better Android TV experience however it’s a big project that will take our team several months.

What can I do?

For now we would recommend either

- use the Back button to exit out of the Neon app after you’ve finished watching a show or movie on Neon, this should provide some improvement with the slow loading.

- If the above option doesn’t work for you, casting content to your Android TV/Android TV device until the interim hot fix is live in a couple of weeks time.

I have since ditched my Chromecast with Google TV 4K, as I've bought a TCL C835. I have noticed a large performance improvement from the sheer processing power of the TV when compared to the Chromecast. The only way to fix performance at the moment is to throw faster hardware at it. Terrible really, since the app is basically just a full screen website.

Their back button solution is useless too - you actually have to go into the app settings and force close it, then clear the app's cache. That does improve performance briefly.

I find Neon it's ok with infrequent use, minimal searching, and no seeking. Otherwise, it's hopeless.

Imo this is not a processing power thing.

Looks like Sky had better sort their Neon app for Google TV out if they anticipate an uptick of use if (HBO) Max isn't coming to NZ.  But will they after how many months now and counting...?

What does the new Sky-HBO deal mean for the impending arrival of Max?

I have given up on Neon and cancelled my subscription.

A few days later I got a survey, so I provided some feedback.

On my end, the main interface has been slightly improved (though only after force quitting the app in the Android settings menu), but seeking still has multiple second delays before the bar even shows up, then multiple seconds on top of that to go forward or back per press. Resuming playback after switching to another app or the TV being on standby is still virtually impossible.

We get stuttering on Neon (android TV, connected via Ethernet, GB fibre ) and it's the only service which does this.

For the price they want to charge, the service is sub-standard.

Yes it’s only Android TV that this happens on and is an issue with the app itself, not the connection. Web browsers, LG webOS, iOS, etc, have no issue.

This has only been happening since January. It was fine when I signed up last year.

I get the feeling I'm supposed to use a skybox now : )

My sub has expired. I have not renewed it. Not entirely due to this issue. It was still usable. None of the content grabbed me recently, but this was definitely demotivating.

Basically Neon is sort of usable on Android TV.  As long as you force quit it and restart it after watching every episode/movie.  And don't want to use playback controls while watching.  I really can't understand why the app developers cant fix this. It's not like it is a difficult to reproduce issue.    Unless the whole app is rotten from the ground up.

Shame because the content is good.

I use an ATV4. Android covers a lot of devices. Apple covers one, thats easy. Easy to support. Well ATV4 vs ATV4k is still probably one device. A bit like TV's not updating apps, they cannot do that forever. While Android given its widespread use how do you support every device?

Android is designed literally for that purpose - supporting a very wide suite of hardware. This has nothing to do with it. Every other streaming app runs perfectly fine - it is just Neon.

I'd kinda agree if there was one Android device that did work well with Neon.

Then add the fact that Netflix works, Disney+, Amazon Prime and, uh, Apple TV+
