I'm thinking of this type of service for my olds, Dad has a Homecast FreeviewHD PVR and makes very good use of this so would want recording ability.

It is very unlikely. TVNZ and National are both opposed to its continuation.

TVNZ would be happy enough to continue with TVNZ7 if they are provided with the funds to do it. Part of United Future's agreement with the govt is to continue funding for TVNZ7 so there may be life in it yet.

If TVNZ are being allocated funding, they'll want to use it to subsidise for-profit programming wherever possible.

They can't take funding allocated for a TVNZ7 and use it for something else. It's a misconception that TVNZ gets loads of govt dollars, they only get govt money for specific areas such as TVNZ7, and Maori/PI programming. Any funding they receive for 'profit' programming is contestable funding through NZ On-Air and that is once again tagged to fund specific programs, not just thrown into the kitty

They are desperate to turn a profit because as soon as they can't the government will want to privatise them.

TVNZ return a handy dividend to the government on an annual basis and still return a small profit after the dividend. I'm not sure of the logic that the govt will privatise an enterprise that is not making a profit, who would want to buy something that is going to lose money (excepting Clark & Cullen's train set)?

If this comes with some kind of desktop software/API that can be used to integrate the PPV features into Mediaportal, then it could be worth a look. If not (most likely) then I'll stick to my current setup.

Agree. I also can't see a CI card reader so I'm curious as to how it will authenticate users.

Looks like it might need the internet, and if so, will this have to be a specific provider?

These are hybird IPTV/DVB-T boxes and state of the art with HDMI interfaces. If you think these are cheap what do you think of the standard definition satellite boxes that are circa 1998 and still being used.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Change 'Sports' to 'SoHo' and you would have me, change it to 'movies' and you would have plenty of others.

But then who would pay for 'normal' Sky?

What we may get is some sort of pay-per-view Sport service but if it is too good/cheap then you start seeing drop off of 'normal' Sky.

So how much would you pay on a pay per view basis for an:

English Premier Football match?

All fair comments but in my case the football is the ONLY reason I have Sky so anything less than the $90 a month Im currently paying would work for me.

If I could get the Arsenal games on a PPV basis I would be a very happy man.

Reading the press release and faq posted I'm actually warming to this service. Sure it's lack of permanent sports and limited channel line up are issues but the fact you can buy the box outright and pay as you go is a great idea. It will be perfect for my dad who is opposed to paying for sky, but would really appreciate the ability to get a few of the channels available as and when he pleases. It will make a great present when launched.

The lack of a PVR is there to avoid caniballizing Sky's MySky subscriptions.
Heck, if Sky's broadcast partners don't like people keeping content on their STB's for years on end, they're not going to encourage it with another STB that can record / format shift.

Now what I'm interested in, is the connections on the back... will there be HDMI / component / composite / S-Video / optical / Co-ax / stereo RCA? Can it simultaneously output HDMI and component etc. Oh well, time will tell I suppose.

I'm sure that's deliberate. The people this is aimed at are looking for a simple, no frills, cheap product so the looks won't put them off (I'm not being insulting, I'm probably in this category too). On the other hand there's a whole lot of existing sky customers who like their flash Mysky boxes - the last thing Sky want is to give them an additional reason to downgrade by making this new box a beautiful design. It's just like the supermarket home brands.
