How does one do that?

By creating a single reply post with all the quotes one after the other? It's not against the FUG but it's annoying to see reply after reply just quotes. Some people manage to do this well...

I've seen some that have boxed quotes and their reply, that's a good idea. They aren't quotes as such, not in a forum context at least. I assume I have two windows open, copy and paste the quote text into my reply post, how do I put a box around the quotes?

And apologies. I get in late and I see stuff so I attend to each one individually

Swapping Sky for Spark doesn't really get me going. Both only have NZ as their addressable market and if not a loss leader then pricing would be comparable, whereas Amazon could secure cheap rights across a large number of countries not traditionally interested in rugby, go on a big marketing drive to grow interest, and drive down the per-viewer cost. I want my $10/month service including RWC

BTW I previously got pulled up when calling Sky/Prime "Skryme", but it seems "VodaSky" is peachy, so let's all chant "Skodafone"

Hard and expensive? Nope. Just some promotional placement in their existing TV/movie service, which would be seen by a worldwide audience. Did you think they were going to do a global brochure mailout?

Would $10/month really be a risk? For Spark, sure - the potential for losses is massive. But Amazon is a US$750b company whose whole business model is based on winning on scale with razor thin margins. The risk would be insignificant compared with launching the global streaming service in the first place.

I have briefly skimmed through this thread. I always find this topic interesting. Sorry for the wall of text, just blasting out opinions...

In regards to Sky. They annoy me from a point of view that they hold all the cards but have done nothing for the future of digital entertainment here. The have the rights, they have the pay tv customers, the have a free to air channel and they they own the outside broadcast equipment to produce the big domestic sporting events (which IMO, they do very well - most of the older crew brought their experience from TVNZ anyway... Sky didn't start from scratch there). Essentially I should've been able to get Sky delivered via the net five years ago. Boo.

I'm not sure on Amazon. The only reason I would see them being interested would be to use a major event to build subscribers in this market as well as others. They wouldn't want just NZ rights, they would want AU as a minimum as well. In NZ they lag behind Netflix and that would be their only reason for wanting sports rights. It wouldn't surprise me to see them go after the next America's Cup.

Content bundling. To me this is both equally relevant and redundant today... Relevant to keep subscriber costs down, redundant from a traditional tv viewer experience. For example, if Spark secured rugby rights there is nothing stopping them from bundling other sports they also choose to buy into an online "sports channel". When it comes to the rugby events, you just access them live/on demand. Bundling doesn't need to disappear because of the internet, it's what Netflix does. There is crap on there I don't watch but it would have been purchased as a package of content from a supplier/network. From that point of view, It's a better experience than traditional pay tv as you don't have to time-shift it, it's instantly available.

New Zealand sport rights are nothing like anything else. Producing and delivering high quality live sport is no easy task. Buying the rights to the RWC in another country is easy.

Hope all the naysayers looking forward to SKYs Demise have been enjoying the commonwealth games. TVNZ is having an abortion on coverage. Let me tell you now, if they cut off an all blacks game to go to adverts this will be the only chance they ever get

Based on the repeated comments like this, I have not bothered with the games. That Japan RWC thing? I wouldn't now count that as off Skys table at all. Often the hate Sky brigade comment how good Skys sport coverage is. Not meaning the game, but the overall presentation. They do that well and add atmosphere to the living room. It needs to be fun and enjoyable, not an effort.

Commonwealth Games had been almost unwatchable with ads in the middle of races missing crucial parts or just missing whole races altogether. Our during play in netball and hockey etc rather in the quarter and half time breaks so when it comes back the score has changed and you don't know what happened. It's impossible to watch live so I've been recording and watching a day behind.

I know they are necessary to fund the rights but surely they can be fit in at better times rather than have to miss events. Guess we can look forward to having to miss half of each game if TVNZ have the rugby world cup next year.

I am disappointed that what would be a possible gold-medal precursor for hockey (NZ vs Aus (W)) is not on a channel tonight. Watching NZ drop a game against Scotland in the netball is apparently a higher priority.

^ Wow your right, it is on the online streaming only channel, which might be better for me, because Duke and TVNZ extra without HD tickets on Sky make for some pretty horrific hokey watching!

You dont need a HD ticket to get TVNZ (or TV3) in HD on Sky. But Duke is only in HD via Freeview-T and TVNZ extra is not in HD at all (Freeview or Sky). So unless its on TV1 or you're watching it on Freeview-T then its hockey in SD (even in this day and age!) which is still better than no hockey at all.

Streaming (and at that time) means it wont get watched in my household (it would have been recorded to a PVR but in this case - no). I might have considered streaming a full replay the next day.... but it doesnt look like I can do that.

Probably slightly in the wrong thread but I saw some discussion of TVNZ/Comm Games.... I know it's hard to get all this to come together but this is what I would have done for the Games if I was in charge and money was no big deal! Wall of text warning!!!

TVNZ1: Keep standard broadcast schedule with a 30 min highlights package every-night or early afternoon.
TVNZ+1: Turn into GAMES EXTRA.
TVNZ2: Keep standard broadcast schedule.
TVNZ+2: Turn into GAMES EXTRA 2.
DUKE: Rebrand into GAMES EXTRA 3 so it makes sense to people.
GAMES EXTRA: Run as much Live NZ content as possible with schedule conflicts flowing on to GE 2 and 3 as appropriate.
GAMES EXTRA 2: Run as much Live content as possible.
GAMES EXTRA 3: Run as much Live content as possible.

ONLINE: Use the Games as an opportunity to update TVNZ OD apps (website/Apple TV app/Android Apps) so they are scalable and can handle multi-channel events such as this by adding sources as required. This type of sporting event should be easy for TVNZ. They don't have to physically cover anything, just find a place to play it.

ADVERTISING: Schedule full screen ads between quarters/timeouts when possible. At other times (and esp. with sports that don't have natural breaks) run small to medium banner adverts at top left of screen. Easy enough to ask the ad teams to do and is not complicated to create. They will just cycle websites/specials/company names etc in banner form every 5-10 minutes. That way you don't break into content and they get their full adverts played in the natural breaks. People also can't fast forward through them... People should understand FTA needs advertising so be a bit more creative and sensible about it.

STAFF: Keep as many staff NZ as possible (with the exception of some news reporters who can gather interviews). TV isn't glamorous and TVNZ can can potentially do a better job from NZ especially with their new augmented reality graphics in the studio. Have the commentators announce breaks so it's not rough. The current broadcasting is very clunky and tells me some coverage is host broadcast commentators which is why this is occurring. The presentation director seems to be just crashing into adverts when they think it's the best time. Wouldn't surprise me if it was 1-2 presentation directors responsible for all channels which is never easy.

Is this even technically possible and affordable? I would have no clue but I would say not...
