I'd kinda agree if there was one Android device that did work well with Neon.

Then add the fact that Netflix works, Disney+, Amazon Prime and, uh, Apple TV+

I get that but you need to manage an Android app to cater for a swath of varying devices. Well branded and capable hardware to lesser hardware.

Ive read many threads on Android TV devices, most are great, some arent, why is that?

I use an ATV4. Android covers a lot of devices. Apple covers one, thats easy. Easy to support. Well ATV4 vs ATV4k is still probably one device. A bit like TV's not updating apps, they cannot do that forever. While Android given its widespread use how do you support every device?

Android is designed literally for that purpose - supporting a very wide suite of hardware. This has nothing to do with it. Every other streaming app runs perfectly fine - it is just Neon.

Maybe Neon need to update the app, bit only for modern TV's/devices? Same issue why many good TV's have apps that fail or stop, too many for one TV manufacturer to support.

Not applicable here. This isn't me banging on about Android being better than ATV (or being worse).

This is about the Neon app and in particular the Neon app on Android. There are people here who have fantastic Android devices (e.g. Nvidia Shield) and people with not so grunty devices (arguably me and my Mi Box) who have no issues whatsoever with all those other services I have mentioned...... Neon have dropped the ball here and/or don't care about Android. And that includes the official Google devices.

(Apologies if a bit short - am trying to help MiL with One NZ - now they are a complete bunch of bar stewards)

I find the app works ok if you memorize the way the UI works and operate it as if you are blind.

e.g. if you want to seek backwards, don't press left and then wait an intollerable amount of time for the seek bar to come up.  Instead press left 3 times and then enter.  You will find the app actually responds and seeks in a normal amount of time..  It's just waiting for UI controls to redraw that is extremely slow. Likewise to turn subtitles on, up up right right right enter.

Right, so use the app as the developer intended instead of, you know, as a user ?

there are not that many official android TV devices.
All those cheap android tv boxes on aliexpress usually do not run "android TV" but a modified version of regular android.
Building the Neon app will be to a single spec - doesn't vary for all the different devices.
Yet, Neon is a horrible app on all android TV devices.

Hi all, I’ve received a potentially promising update on this situation from Neon support via email:

“I apologise for this.

There was a Google update which has caused issues for the Neon app. We have tried fixing this and Google have made more recent updates but unfortunately it is still happening.

For a better experience, if you use the Back button to exit out of the Neon app after you’ve finished watching a show or movie you may see some improvement with the slow loading. This is only a possible work around.

We have an interim hot fix the team are working on that we hope will be ready in the next couple of weeks. However because the root cause of the issue is due to incompatibility with a Google setting, we will be completely rebuilding the Neon app to fix these issues and provide an overall better Android TV experience however it’s big project that will take our team several months.

This rebuild is under way.”

Hopefully this is the beginning of a new era for Neon.

That's the same response they sent me 3 months ago.  Someone at sky needs to learn the meaning of the word 'hotfix'.

Damnit, I take that back then. Did they specify they'd release the hotfix in a couple of weeks as they did in my response?

Update from Neon - I questioned them about sending the same email out to everyone in response to performance concerns, going back several months:

“While the most of the email will be the same as we have posted before there is an important difference. The difference is "This rebuild is under way."

We are in active development of the app. From what I know we are near the testing and approval phase. I cannot give a date for the release for it will depend on what the testing finds.”

… Hopefully this means something by the end of he year.

This is a tradition with Sky NZ. The original android Sky app in around 2011 took about 2 years longer than the Apple version.

Too much to ask while they are rebuilding an app to click the "support 5.1" multichannel audio option?

Asked Neon about this several years ago, was told it was on their radar

Has there been an app update? I was still having issues two days ago - works fine after clearing the cache and force quitting the app in the android settings menu, but after watching one show it goes back to severe delays.
