Different company somewhat trapped in a time warp in the 80s

If Sky did away with satellite in NZ there would be a huge number of people who would not be able to consume Sky Content at all, or in some cases, TV full stop.

It's not a case of being stuck in the 80's, it's a case of not wanting to cut off thousands of people who rely on their service.

I would be happy with the dongle but SWMBO wants to be able to record. Looks like we will end up with a Dish and an extra $15 a month. It appears SKY are doing away with the Dish in the UK so why are they keeping it here.

Different companies with completely different market geographies and demographics.

I think the UK will mostly do away with dishes were possible!! but some areas they will need to retain them.

Purely streaming is not an option but business suicide!!

Doesn't mean they should drop the sat service, just stop using it as their primary channel to customers. There is very little capacity on there for stuff, so lously low FPS interlaced 1080 is all they will be doing for quite some time. Online they can have nice proper 60FPS, 4k, HDR, Atmos etc if they choose to. Which they don't. Because they're stuck in the early 2000s where 1080i and dolby digital was considered great.

We can rely on sky and other NZ broadcasters being stuck in the past only dragging themselves out of it when being forced to.

Sky have lots of free bandwidth on satellite. Changing to DVB-S2 with H.264 and dropping the duplicate SD/HD streams effectively doubled the capacity. I will guess that 4K HDR 100P will be carried on sat as a premium product. Sky had intended to drop transponders, from 14 half to 10 half from memory, on transition to new satellite (which most likely will also see transition to use of HEVC).

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

The problem there is the cost per Satellite customer will double for the 10% that rely on it if the 90% move away from it

What really needs to happen is to ensure that the remaining 13% of the population that don't have access to fibre get accesses to at least 100mbps.

Now this is possible right now with Starlink but the $1000 install cost is out of reach for a lot of people

and to be fair Chorus are working towards this by redeploying cabinets in areas where copper is withdrawn out rural areas giving people a shorter loop length and faster speeds

Once everyone has access to 100mbps or more then Sky can do a Mass migration off satellite

Then there is one more hurdle to overcome, live betting requires zero delay, the nature of streaming means that you are 2-3 minutes behind live tv (try what sky sport of satellite and skygo at the same time and you will see what I mean)

Then put the price of it up to reflect the declining userbase that use it, which will hopefully drive them to invest in internet infrastructure instead of bleeting that it will cost $x0,000 to get fiber to their whop-whop locations.

The only thing that should be on broadcast services is live events, everything else shifting to apps is what's happening, cant let a few people in the middle of nowhere hold that back.

I was at the Rugby on Saturday night, and in the lounge they had the coverage from Spark Sport. It was about 90 seconds behind the game. After a try was scored, I got up to go to the bathroom and as I was walking through the lounge, the try still hadn't been scored.

You couldn't stand in the lounge and watch the game as the commentary was all so far out. They did mute it after a while for those that preferred to watch from there.

It's happening now, closed copper cabinets from fibre areas are being moved to the whop whops to improve this

It will improve as more efficient codecs evolve, will take time though.

I have a Sony walkman I take to the ground for live games

It can be done now. Mixer did it, twitch does it sometimes, youtube will do it too if you send to them the right way.

They choose to have mad levels of buffering to allow for people that choose to stream over crap connections or wifi to reduce complaints
