What distribution rights does Sky have? I am not asking for an opinion stated as fact, I am looking for an actual fact (with source would be super!)
I have heard they have "premium exclusive rights" what does that mean exactly, and how much do they pay to secure that?!

Any input would be useful, but again, please do not state an opinion as a fact.

If this is about Quickflix or others, the easier way to answer is everything that is not broadcast first on TVONE, TV2, 3 and FOUR. SKY owns about 5% of UK & USA first rights in NZ.

Sports and Movies are a different kettle of fish, some ask for competition and I was one but when it came via sports mainly Football rights in the UK, it gets very expensive having to sign up to 2 services charging a premium.

I aim to misbehave.

Ok, so how would I go about getting episodes of say "The Simpons" and legally screen them? Or other series? I have Googled this, but I get nowhere and can't find any good information on it.

Thank you for the help so far guys.

Not sure what exactly you are trying to do and, in particular, what you mean by "legally screen them"?

The Simpsons screen on both Sky and FTA channels. They are also available fairly cheaply as per-season DVD box sets from the likes of the Warehouse. If you want to get episodes legally, by short answer would be to either record them or buy the discs. Both these options are legal.

As in, if I wanted to start my own TV channel, what would I have to do in order to put them on air... legally.

Buy broadcast rights of FOX (news corp)

ther isn;t one set of 'rights'.

So, for example, Sky might own the exclusive rights to broadcast the Simpsons via satellite, but they might not onw the rights to sell subscription video on demand (S-VoD). there are lots of other kinds of rights - first run TV, PPV, catch-up, etc etc

there are also different timing windows, determined by the rights holders (Fox, NBC Universal, Warner Bros etc) which mean that although maybe Sky hasn't bought the rights for S-Vod of Game of Thrones that doesn't mean someone else can simply buy those rights from HBO (Time Warner) and show GoT right now. they might have to wait a certain amount of time before they can legally offer them as streaming, regardless of whether they own the rights or not.

Brilliant, this was very helpful! Thank you. Pretty much the exact info I was looking for.

Ha ha! For sure, if I could just find out contact info for distributors and the likes.. It is very hard for me to find the info for here in NZ. States I can find it... But there is so much crap on Google, wading through it is a mission to find them in lil' ol' NZ!
