Hi all,
thanks for the informative site, great for problem solving. I have searched re MySky and copywright protection but never noticed anyone mention the history channel - normally that it's movies, sport, etc. I like to video docos to watch with the kids but since going to MySky it won't work. Is my recorder broken or this is macrovision kind of protection? Thanks.

Interesting question.
I also like to record the occasional program on History Channel. I have just basic sky with the silver Pace box and never had any problems. Box office movies are the only thing that won't record. Movies and sport were OK before I ditched them.
I was under the impression that only some channels via MySky were copy protected i.e on demand and box office etc.
Given the number of outputs on the back I figured external recording from MySky shouldn't be any different to my current setup.
How are you connecting MySky to the recorder? Maybe the wrong type of output is selected.

Also can't comment specifically on MySky, but can confirm that I have never had a problem with anything (History or the Movie channels) to my DVD recorder using standard STBs (Pace, or Motorola). They Sky guy even produced an extra cable, hooked up the recorder, and tested it for me as part of the install.

If Macrovision turns out to be the problem, you can get recorders that don't care about macrovision (the Hauppauge HD PVR springs to mind), and can also get simple cheap devices to clean up signals that also remove macrovision (Google "Video Stabilizer").

I never had any problem prior to mysky either. I have looked into stabilizers but haven't found anyone guaranteeing it will work so reluctant to hand over hard earned cash. Jaycar used to have one that seemed likely (dr. video) but it no longer is stocked. Will look into the other option you suggested. Cheers so far - anyone out there with mysky had the same problem?

You're bypassing a TPM - that's covered in the law.

Aye. Thank the nice people over in the US of A who wrote that law for us. Probably why you won't readily find these devices in stores any more too. It's legal for, say, the Foundation for the Blind to break protection in order to for example transcribe movies into braille or something, or the National Library to strip the copy protection in order to create an archive copy, but it's not legal for you.

The new forum usage guidelines are fairly clear on posts dealing with TPMs. Saying a specific technology can be used is ok, describing step-by-step how to do it is not.

Also, out of interest, i just looked at the copyright act.

Section 37 is fairly clear that you can't: make, import into New Zealand, possess in the course of a business, or offer for sale or hire a means to make infringing copies. Nowhere can I see that it illegal to talk about it. Nor should it be.

A good analogy is murder. Murder is clearly illegal. However, it's not illegal to talk about murder or discuss how a murder could be committed. Material covering this (eg Agatha Christie novels) aren't banned, and the media discusses (in detail) murder trials - including how actual murders were committed.

Good point JimmyH. Nonetheless, I don't want to disrespect the forum's policies (yet disrespecting archaic and draconian copyright laws handed on from Big Brother Uncle Sam doesn't bother me at all : ). Thankfully YouTube seems to have most doco's I look for on it and has saved me again in this case with the same doco I had viewed on sky - actually, now I think about it why do I waste $90 a month on sky when I can get most of it on the net?? I believe streaming isn't yet illegal so I've been using that to help me teach the kids about quantum physics. Cheers all!
