So it's winter and I'm looking for something to watch once analog tv turns off forever in a month or so, (West coast SI and Hawkes Bay). Where are you Igloo? Is this an epic fail or what?

I guess it doesn't matter if you live on the West Coast as you'll not have Igloo anyway. But why is it taking sooo looong?

I suspect most possible future Igloo viewers have done this by now.

I'm sorry for starting a new thread. It's been three weeks since the "we're nearly there and really sorry for the delay" email.

I guess I was hoping for a quicker fix to their problem, and maybe another email updating their progress.

I'd like to see a date announced, but I guess having missed the announced launch date twice already, they're gunshy now.

They're not mutually exclusive...you can have both...and more!  You're only limited by the number of inputs on your TV - even then you can get a multibox :)

I don't just settle for Freeview, I also use iTunes, Netflix, Hulu Plus, 4OD and iPlayer.  If I had Sky I'd use that too...

The world isn't binary anymore with either Free vs Sky, or Analogue vs Digital.  It's getting the content from as many sources as you can be bothered setting up - or as many end up coming to fruition (like Igloo might/might not).

Technical foibles delaying the launch of pay TV platform Igloo are believed to relate to the additional challenges of transmitting in New Zealand's topography, a source familiar with TV signals said.

Igloo general manager Chaz Savage could not be reached for comment yesterday, but the platform, a mix of broadband download and digital terrestrial broadcasting, is believed to have problems with the technical separation of individual channels.

A source said that although the Igloo technology had been used before in South Africa, the terrain there was not as challenging as New Zealand with its mountainous nooks and crannies.

Igloo, a joint venture between SkyTV and TVNZ, was to have launched last month, but is now looking at early next month at best.

Yeah, but one of the big selling points was going to be "get igloo as your HD freeview box, and then you can buy content later when you like"

Once a customer had an HD freeview box is under their TV, it is harder to get customers to fork out more $$$ for hardware to duplicate what they already have...

All of the conent you mention, do not require you fork out for additional hardware...

BS (and I do not say that often). It is late because they are not ready, either bad project planning or a design mistake requiring major rework. I'd suspect design mistake as I know their hardware was already late for compliance testing about 5 months ago.

The longer they take to roll it out the less interest there will be in taking it up. It's probably dead in the water already.
Their website is pretty rubbishy too. Little or no info and no apparent updating in 3+ months.

To make matters worse you can not use an igloo box to record like a PVR, you can pause live TV for up to four hours and possibly record to a DVD or HDD recorder but they are not releasing a PVR igloo box. That will kill them IMO
On another note, if they dont launch soon they may loos their frequencies as they have a use them or loose them policy, they can only be unused for 5 years if I recall and it must be getting close to that time of decomissioning of the old sky terestial network.
Sorry about the spelling.
John

Igloo are broadcasting so they have implemented their service.

If they don´t want anybody outside of their closed test group to watch it, then is a commercial matter for them to deal with.

And that is why it is a fail on their part, they are missing out on all those people who have to make a choice. But I guess normal sky is still an option for them, and they are higher value customers.

I think there is very little risk of them losing the frequency, as to be fair they do a have product, but they have experience problems. It is better to delay the release a product, than to release something with problems.

I wish that policy was introduced for empty retail buildings around NZ towns. eg if it doesn't get used, it reverts back to residential.
