With the American elections coming up you would think that CNN would be the best channel to watch for the coverage.

But I have one issue.

When is Sky going to start broadcasting CNN in 16:9 aspect ratio instead of the outdated version we get at the moment?

CNN International is only broadcast in 4:3, so there isn't much Sky can do about this.

CNN is 16:9, but this is the US only channel. The rest of the world gets CNNi which is completely different.

Pity we don't get the option for either like some other  parts of the world seem to do..

It went 16:9 today but only domestic programming is in widescreen whereas CNNI content is still 4:3.

CNN USA has been 16:9 for a good 18 months to 2 years now. It's only CNNI that's still 4:3

Sky could at least add pillarboxing to it so that you didnt end up with fattovision unless you have the sky box converting poorly to 1080i.

I was thinking about why sky doesn't do that too. Maybe it's all the hotel tv systems that they don't want to upset by setting the 4:3 flag?

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....

That's odd. I'm sitting here in Korea right now watching CNNI in 16:9. And I was watching it in 16:9 last week in Hong Kong.

Well even Wikipedia says CNNI is only a 4:3 480i channel with 16:9 letterbox and Google can't seem to find anywhere that says CNNI is now 16:9!

Just checked again and CNNi was broadcasting a programme in 4:3 with pillar boxes here in Korea. However, the following programme reverted back to 16:9 so perhaps CNNi is migrating to 16:9. What's the situation in NZ currently?

I'd post a picture of my TV screen showing the 16:9 aspect ratio, but I don't want swarms of CNN lawyers paying me a visit.

Cheers,

David.

Try sky cnn nz now.

Looks like it's changed to 16.9, but most programming is in 4.3. It's automactically pillar boxing those shows.

A few weeks ago I had to go in settings and set decoder to pillar box 4.3, only thing was that ended up with bars four sides of picture.

Now if press set up won't let me change aspect ratio, and 4.3 content only has bars on sides of picture, lot better.

Now, all we need is RT to go to 16:9. I don't recall too many other channels having a 4:3 ratio.

Just noticed on the SkyTV facebook page someone asked about CNN in the last few days.  Sky replied yesterday with the following to his question:

from our CNN channel manager:
On Thursday the CNN feed was changed from 4:3 to widescreen.

They also said not all programming has changed over yet.

What's RT?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
