A relative has an igloo box connected to his samsung led tv using hdmi
When he sets the igloo hdmi audio setting to Dolby the volume control on the igloo remote has no effect on the volume( mute button doesn't mute either )
However when he changes the igloo hdmi audio setting to Stereo Pcm he can use the igloo remote to control the volume again

Couple of questions-
Why does this happen?
Is there any sound quality loss from switching to stereo pcm from dolby?
One other thing. How can he check to see if he still has the free 30 day channel pack so he knows when it expires?

My guess is that the Igloo box isn't tampering with the Dolby stream in any way; it's just passing it directly through to your receiver. I think that's considered to be a "good thing". As for the channel pack, not a clue :)

This is pretty standard for a lot of devices in the world - rather than doing anything to the dolby stream it'll just do a passthru.

Yip, the same thing happens on the HDMI out on my laptop.

If I'm watching Freeview via WMC and it's outputting Dolby, it will output it at a constant volume, and the volume controls in WMC don't do a thing.

Because it only passes through the audio, otherwise it would need to decode it, amplify it and re-encode dolby.  This would not only require significant processing power but also a probably a license from dolby for the encoder.

With 2 channel aac type audio, the box is decoding it anyway and it is outputting raw PCM so it doesn't need to reencode it.
