Speculation here that William Shatner's visit to Sky this month is for the launch of a new Sci Fi channel on Sky. Given the previous enthusiasm on this forum about such an offering I'm surprised no one else has picked up on this. If it's true I hope it's in HD.

I hope this isn't another SoHo or Rialto. I can't afford another Sky channel. This would mean a fight with the kids over movies vs SciFi. If I win, I lose:(

Long overdue though!

Yeah, I'd be pretty upset if they made it a pay-channel.

If they add it to the basic or movie package - excellent. If it's like Rialto or Soho - I'll never watch it.

If they were to charge for it, I too would have to consider dropping SoHo (or some other channel option).Frown

If it was a premium add-on channel I might take it, depending on:
- price
- the content line-up
- whether the shows were ad-free
- degree of bundled annoyances (promos playing over "scrunched" closing credits, which have me close to cancelling SoHo) etc)

All of those would have to be appropriate.

I'd like to think that my very strong feedback in the last survey helped to get this, but will also not pay extra for it as it has always been a shortcoming in the basic line-up. There is nothing to draw Sci-Fi fans to Sky, so let's hope for the best.

my guess about how it will work

It will be included in the 'basic' subscription at no extra charge, then, in a few months, we will all recieve a latter form Sky telling us about how they have spent money on bringing us awesome new channels and therefore they are putting everyone's price up by $2.

why charge $5 for something that only (say) 50k people will subscribe to when you force all your customers to subscribe and charge $2 to EVERYBODY for it.

if it's anything like the Syfy channel in the USA , dont hold your breath for anything to do with Science fiction, check its lineup and be prepared to be disappointed

Common sense is not as common as you think.

It could be bringing "sftv" from Foxtel Australia? http://www.sftv.com.au/

That might not be bad, quick look at their lineup, Enterprise, Stargate, Quantum Leap (!!!), Sanctuary, Medium, Buffy, Warehouse 13, Forever Knight, Caprica... seems to only be one crappy reality show "Ghost Hunters International". That's actually a channel I'd like to have.

On the other hand, they could bring "SyFy" in from the states, which would be simply unpleasant, their lineup consists almost entirely of reality ghost hunting, reality spooking people, ghost/supernatural horror movies, and remote control robots.

The $2 increase will be for basic and another $2 increase for sport to cover the big jump in league costs

+1 to that.  SyFy in the US is basically another reality crap TV channel..

Yes. We are almost due for the annual "we tried to keep costs down but want to offer you the best experience" June letter so no doubt this will be part of that...

Oh no, maybe the new channel isn't SciFi related: http://dannews.co.nz/2013/03/11/new-sky-channel-to-offer-classic-programming/

Lame. Just lame.

(I shoudl caveat that I do actually like some of the content they are talking abotu here, but I alreaydhave access to it on demand, often in HD, from Netflix, which means this Jones! channel will have absolutely zero value to me.)

Hmmm.... If I was writing that press release I wouldn't have been able to bring myself to use the word compelling.... Doesn't really strike me as that "compelling". I guess it meets their requirement for another price jack up come June..... :-(

No, no, no.... Compelling. Didn't you read the press release!

The sentence above is written in a sarcastic manner....
