As noted here on Stuff: http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/8736779/Igloo-slash-price-of-set-top-box

Is it a good freeview box at that price? Smile

If you only need a TV tuner with some pause functionality, it is fine. If you want a DVR, get something else.

I thought it did have HD, or is that just sky channel?

Considering all new TVS now have tuners built in it is laregly unneeded, unless you want to also buy the sky channels. It is an ok if you have an old CRT tv which doesn't need HD, but freeview boxes will probably go the way of the dinosaur eventually.

TVNZ can't seem to win, they had the tivo which was a superior device due to being a full HD PVR. They could have done something really good with that platform.

Wonder how happy slingshot will be about this. One of the selling points of their bundle was that the free box was rep 200 bucks. If it is now rrp 100 bucks then the bundle is less valuable.

Still didn't cost them anything. A bit like people who purchased tivos at $900, then it dropped to $380, and then down to $199 to get rid of them.

For $100, it is possibily a better option than a freeview HD box, unlessit is missing some of the freeview cahnnels or functionaility. Where does the EPG come from? Over the air from sky, or via the internet?

Cheers for clearing that up.

Still don't see the point though. TV1, 2 and 3 are in HD on freeview anyway.

This article is quiet old but I most of the points are probably still valid:

It uses it's own EPG, there is an Ethernet port and built in WiFi. It has all the Freeview UHF channels. There is no record but there is live pause via USB

As far as I can tell. tv1,2,3 are in HD on Igloo. If you want the 11 channel pack I recommend the Igloo. But, I also have a Panasonic bluray twin tuner terrestrial box to record anything I want. If you don't want the 11 channel pack, there are better terrestrial boxes out there. If you only want one terrestrial box I would recommend a twin tuner one.

It is useful for those who want a bigger choice of channels than what basic Freeview offers but don't want to be locked into a contract with Sky and have a load of channels they have no interest in. It is prepay so no monthly fee if you do not wish it, the 11 channel is optional and you can take it or leave what ever the month  holds for you.

Classic example of trying to sell something the market doesnt really want.

If it was full HD and a PVR I would get it and pay a bit more.

The 'pay' content delivered by Igloo; is that streamed over IP?

It looks like the PPV movies are but I thought all the Freeview transponder space was used up.

The PPV movies are IP, the over the air content is... over the air.
It has its own MUX which broadcasts its channels over the Kordia/JDA network. Yes they are encrypted. The free to air channels are picked up from the other MUXs (Kordia, TVNZ, Mediaworks).

Depends if slingshot are buying the box from igloo to give to customers.

What I mean by that is, if slingshot were buying the box from igloo for 120 bucks and then subsidising the rest to make it free to their customers, they will be pretty pissed that people can just buy the box for 100 from a store.
