Hi Folks,
I am just wondering if Sky when received via a Satellite in High Definition (assuming one has the appropriate decoder and HD Ticket)?

Only the HD channels and only when they're broadcasting something in HD.
1,2,3 Sport, movies and SOHO

Do the normal freeview equiv. channels TV1, 2, C3 etc also get broadcast in HD (when there is HD content)?

On Freeview Satellite - No.
On Sky, I believe so but can't confirm as I don't have HD capable Sky STB.
On Freeview UHF - Definitely.
Igloo - Don't know.

I understand that the igloo box would just be a regular STB tuner for the normal freeview channels - it only decrypts the sky/igloo channels if you have paid your monthly subscription.
So in other words it would just pass the other freeview channels through to the TV unaltered. TV1,TV2,TV3 should be in HD (as they broadcast in 1080), the other channels are SD. Dont know what the igloo channels are broadcast in.

Thanks for that folks

Relatives are moving outside of the freeview UHF broadcast area, so are looking at Sky as an alternative, but they have an HDTV and just need to know that HD content on normal free to air channels will still be in HD.

I am not sure if it has changed, but to get HD on any channels via sky you used to need to go with a Mysky HDi package,

The normal channels in HD are encrypted by Sky , so as your original post mentions they will have to pay for the privilege

1,2,3 - not 4 on MySky.

Also - my old Sky box (non-MySky) did NOT broadcast HD content, as it wasn't HD capable.

To confirm, Sky via Satellite or HFC Cable with an appropriate decoder (ie MySky HDi or T-Box) is in HD for TV1,2 and 3 no HD ticket required.

It is also in HD for primary Movie and Sports channels plus SoHo, with appropriate ticket and subscription. Plus some movie on demand channels
