Somewhere out there internet is priced reasonably....

So what kinda SKY channels would one get with this package? Is it just basic channel line up or does it include all sports and movies add ons?

I could be wrong here in my quick calculations, but taking into account currency... it seems the DSL package is about $30-$40 cheaper than what it is in NZ? You could put this down to population / demand / competition.

I'll make you a deal, you increase the population of NZ to 80 million, move Australia as close to NZ as Europe is to the UK and increase the population of Australia to 350 million and I'll start a company offering those prices

Not sure about the sky channels, when i was in the uk a few years ago,it was a lot of different channels.

5 pounds = $9.95NZD for unlimited internet....is there a dsl provider in nz that has true unlimited internet...or even ""nz unlimited" for $50-$60nzd?

those features are really cool.... "unlimited sky wifi in thousands of popular hotspots"

Yea was thinking about the population situation......supply and demand.
how are the prices calculated? Is there a super company out there that holds all the bandwidth?
iv looked at ispmap.co.nz but trying to look higher than that, if that makes sense?

It looks to me like you need to add Sky Line Rental for 'from' GBP14.50, too, so ~GBP20/month which is ~NZ$40/month. And once the intro deal is over its about NZ$50 (or $70 for the higher speed). Still cheap, sure, but only for the relative data cap (or lack thereof), which is an ongoing issue in a small isolated island village.

Nope, but then neither is there one in the UK, since if you read the small print you also have to buy a sky landline 'from $14.50', and also note the 5 pounds is a promotional offer and the price for the broadband doubles to 10 pounds after 12 months. So the 'true' price is 25 quid, or about $50, not $10 as you imply in your post. ISPs Yes, thats' still cheaper than the cheapest unlimited plan - which I think is Flip at $85, but the difference is not as large as you make out.

Most, if not all, of that difference can be explained by the different, and much higher, regulated input prices ISPs pay here compared to the UK.
Whether the regulated prices should be lower here is debatable (and is currently being debated!)

yeah data cap is a big deal and hoepfeully there's a way for the providers to eliminate that cap, my last xnet bill was $450, almost choked when i saw it.

Who regulates the isp's in nz?
Is there a public forum for this debate, if so where can it be found? Any idea on the resolution date?

How can some companies offer ridiculously cheap pricing ( eg. orcon ) compared to other providers.....xnet was $100 for 30gb, 30mb fibre and a phone line at one point,think they have changed recently.Whereas Orcon is $134+- for 100mb Fibre, phone(unlimited national calls) and "unlimited" data?

I think BT have a similar deal on as well with national wifi, and I think a relative in japan has mentioned it is common there.

Those countries that are cheap now tend to be the ones that got on the UFB bandwagon some time back.

Out of interest I do wish they would put the 's' on the end of Mb. According to the way I read the first advert 16 megabits is about 2 kilobytes of data. So once one has used up a page of A4 text, that's it. :)

...except for the UK then. They are well behind NZ in terms of UFB roll out.

by contrast, we have FTTC available to 80% of households right now, and VDSL available to around 60%, both higher numbers than the numbers BT has abandoned as being unattainable for them

We also have FTTH already available to around 15% of households, again, this is higher than the target that BT has been unable to meet and is now abandoning!

On a more helpful note, though, I hope you've considered changing ISP if you're seriously using enoguh data to get $450 bills with xnet. I'm sure you could drop that bill drastically with Snap, Telecom, Orcon etc ;) But, that's getting a bit off-topic for this thread, so I'll stop there, hehe.

Busy trialing out voyager which kicks in tomorrow...100mb line, 1000gb data and 8 static ips with reverse dns for $200. Not a fan of telecom and orcon annoy me. Interested in Snap tho, havent really heard much about them.

think so, was bought out by seeby woodhouse, founder of orcon.
