Why do they crop movies on your Sky Movies channel? They've been doing this for awhile. Just watched The Descendants in 1.78:1 ratio. It was released at the movies on 2.35:1 ratio.

Sky talk about HD and creating a great experience, but don't show movies the way they were intended. Annoying.

It depends on what the supplier provides. Some are in 2:35 and others 1:78. Often the broadcaster gets no say in the matter. It depends on the studio also.

It seems to be a problem with all HD movies especially the ones on the FTA channels. SD movies still seem to stay in their 2.35:1 format. Probably the great unwashed out there complained that they had bought a new HD TV and wanted to see the whole screen filled and no black bars at the top and bottom. I have a friend who bough a new TV a couple of years ago with only an analog tuner much to my dismay and wanted me to setup the channels with "FatoVision" for the reason above. Can't stand this current ZoomoVision" that they do myself. Prefer the aspect ratio that the director filmed in..

That used to annoy me on Quickflix too. I started to watch Ben-Hur on there, which is supposed to be 2.76:1 and it had been cropped way down to 16:9. That's more than a third of the picture missing!

I wont bother watching a movie on tv if they do that or only provide SD when there are blurays available. Its bad enough we have to suffer the braindead pal speedup which should have died with the move to digital.

You don't suffer it if you only buy Blu-rays..

From recent memory...

Solomon Kane was released in NZ/Oz in chopped 1.78, original release was 2.40.
Sloppy when the trailer and promos all feature clips in 2.40.
A Roadshow release I believe, who are probably the most useless distributors around.
The UK BD is in the correct aspect ratio.

The latest Jason Statham film Redemption (rather good, a solid 7/10) is also knobbled; 1.78 on BD, 2.40 in the cinema.

Sigh.

I bought "Taken" on BR in NZ a few months ago, and they'd messed up the subtitles (you can either have no subtitles even when they're speaking French, or you can have English subtitles throughout the whole movie, even the English-speaking bits). I returned it and picked up a US copy and that one's correct; the subtitles only appear when they're speaking French. Now don't get me started on releases that move the subtitles into the black bars!

Regarding aspect ratios, NZ Iron Man 3 says 1.78 on the case but is actually the correct 2.39.

I think that old3eyes meant that you don't suffer pal speedup on blu rays.

There are still plenty of blu rays that are cropped though particularly in Australia/New Zealand which is why I mainly buy blu rays from overseas. The other thing that really annoys be with local blu ray releases is when they come with 5.1 soundtracks, when overseas releases of the same movie come with 7.1 soundtracks. Luckily I have a region free Oppo blu ray player so will always buy the version with the correct aspect ratio and the best soundtrack (7.1 if available)
