can't get subtitles on SkyTV?! :(

ok, so I got a new remote so I could access subtitles, and I followed the instructions (which seemed a little off -- apparently I just push the left/right buttons during a show to get subtitles, but I have to put the "+" to even get that audio/subtitle menu which those arrow buttons respond to.

nevertheless, once I get that menu, and I can choose 'english/Italian' for audio on some shows, or 'English/none' for subtitles on some shows, the audio doesn't change and nor do subtitles appear.

is it anything to do with the TV (it's not a flatscreen or anything), or am I just doing something wrong?

I've also tried using teletext but can't figure out how to do that through Sky.

my foreign flatmates would really appreciate if we could get this figured out.

I believe that Teletext is gone now so you won't have any luck with that. As for how to get to the "modern" subtitles, I'll have to leave that for someone more experienced.

Edit: Teletext subtitles still exist; see below.

Teletext doesn't exist any more. It was closed down a couple of months ago.
Closed captions doesn't work on all Sky boxes. I believe it doesn't work on the Basic boxes like the small silver Pace box I have. Never tried so can't confirm.

I think you need MySky or MySky+.
I seem to remember reading about captions on their website but it was very hard to find the info.

it says on teletext you can still get subtitles on analogue and sky digital by going to page 801. just tested and I couldn't get it to work.

edit: it is working now

Oh yeah. I think I remember them saying that was the only thing left working too.
Still, only works with rf connection on the basic boxes so would be a rubbish picture anyway. I use component out. I guess it will disappear when analogue disappears in Dec.

so there's no way to access teletext through Sky set up that way? and there's no other captions except on MySky?

As people have said, teletext subtitles are still there. How you see them depends on your decoder. If you have a legacy STB (SD, non-MySKY) with analogue outputs then the teletext pages holding the subtitles are passed straight through with the video and you will need a teletext-capable TV to turn them on and view them. The MySKY HDi's main output, HDMI, can't carry the teletext component so the MySKY has to decode the subtitles internally and add them into the picture, and you turn them on in the decoder, not the TV. The SKY FAQ posted above is accurate and still relevant as SKY haven't dropped subtitles on those services. Many people don't realise that subtitles are not only used by hearing-impaired people (of whom there are many more than we think) but also by people whose English skills aren't up to understanding TV dialogue.

Unfortunately though, if you're using component out and don't have a MySKY, yes, you're a bit stuffed. I think that component is a bit over-rated. I would knock it back to S-video as I don't think there is a visible difference in quality and you should get subtitles on that.

Very few TV sets have S-video inputs these days. The problem arises when using old sky boxes on new TVs that have HDMI or Component/Composite inputs. Composite A/V could be used instead of component and is supposed to work according to Sky but component gives better picture quality. The only time I ever tried S-Video out from my Sky box all I got was an unwatchable B&W picture. I use the composite A/V out to my Recorder and the component out to the TV. Fortunately I'm not interested in CC.

bugger. would the account holder have those, or are they not normally supplied? and are there pics somewhere of these plugs/etc. (I only know RCA/composite/hdmi stuff)
