A friend of mine recently Tweeted about this project on Github:
Node.js module for controlling and monitoring Sky+ HD set top boxes

I did a bit of searching and found this blog post and the associated Github project:
The Sky+HD Picasso DNLA control server protocol
A python based remote control for Sky+HD boxes updated to Picasso

Does anyone know if this kind of functionality is available in NZ? I know I can go to Sky's website and setup a programme to be recorded on MySky but that's via a telephone connection rather than my internet - I assumed the box had a built-in modem and was dialling into the mothership regularly.

Please note I'm not trying to hack into the box or do anything illegal.

Booking a recording on the Sky website (or the mobile app) doesn't require a telephone connection on the MySky box.

How else can it be connected? I've always used the phone line.

A signal via the satellite.

Having the phone line connected just means that you can book pay-per-view stuff using the remote, I think.

If you don't have it connected you probably have to call Sky to book, or do it online.

No, sorry. Completely different software stack here with no DLNA support. Remote bookings go over the satellite (as above) in proprietary format on a closed path.

Pity about the DLNA. If it had that and I could watch recordings over my networked media players, I might be tempted to pay to get MySky.

Instead I stick with SD and record the programs on a Panny Box - which does have DLNA capabilities.

Yeah, it's the most annoying thing about MySky - you can only watch the recorded shows on a TV connected directly to the box.
