"Sky 'to launch new set-top box early' in face of BT competition"

"Sky is reportedly bringing forward the release of its next generation set-top box. According to the Daily Telegraph, the broadcaster is now planning to launch the new box by spring. The move comes amid increased pressure to compete with BT, which is also tipped to release a new set-top box ahead of its exclusive Champions League football coverage. It is claimed that Sky's new offering will be part of a new, higher level premium subscription that will support 4K primarily. Other features, which were reported first last year, are still said to be included on the new box, such as multiscreen viewing on smartphones and tablets, as well as the ability to record and store programmes in the cloud instead of a local hard drive. Competition could heat up further as Virgin Media is also running its own 4K content delivery trials in the UK.”

It’s pretty clear how far Sky NZ are going to have to play catch-up. Seems like Sky UK have got more competition on their plates than from the likes of Netflix and have decided to go head to head with their main rival in the 4K arena….Cloud storage seems interesting too….wonder how much storage a user is allowed??

As you said - there is competition in the UK market.

Sky NZ doesn't need to - because they are already miles ahead of any of the alternatives.

Only in terms of market share and domination, certainly not in regards to value and quality.

I love these Sky threads!

Competition is here, the market will take its natural course. Sky has a higher cost, but its also here, and many channels, easy to use, and I find the quality good as gold.
They will want to retain as much of the current ARPU as they can. Watching with interest.

It’s pretty clear how far Sky NZ are going to have to play catch-up. I think there is limited bandwidth on d1 and once they get rid of all the old decoders then they will be able to free up some bandwidth and make more channels HD. I guess that 4k will go by the by and quickly be replaced by 8k same as 720p and 1080p. in terms of competition in such a small market all that competition has achieved so far is fragmentation, just look at English Premier League fans, if they also want to watch any other soccer/sports on sky they are general worse off. My 2c

Sky is safe here.

No one has the money to take them on for sport.

We don't have the equivalent of uk's OFCOM to break the monopoly and for superrugby / all blacks / black caps coverage to be split to more than one broadcaster.

There is no political appetite to change anything.

Sky I'm sure has donated enough to both political parties. Remember all the work Sky did towards the copyright legislation. Yes you can rip CDs but no not DVDs.

Sport? EPL, MotoGP, V8 Supercars, to name the ones I am aware of. AVESCO re V8 Supercars charges a mint, yet Sky doesn't have it. Thus, I dont buy the money for part issue

Monopoly. Sky doesnt control the Super Rugby, AB's, Black Caps, it buys them, and in these cases, bought the rights. Others had the opportunity. As they did with EPL, MotoGP, V8 Supercars, and I recall golf is going elsewhere. Thus, who has EPL, MotoGP, V8 Supercars has a monopoly? Part, maybe all the issue is $ wanted by the sports. Clearly they get more money by only seeking an exclusive provider, so the exclusive providers gets high advertising rates to help cover the high rates demanded by the sports. And to be honest, the Black Caps would not have cost a great deal, so many could have bought that.

Politics? ComCom has been mentioned on and off re Sky. There is competition out there now.

Rip CD?. Have I missed something? AFAIK, the copyright terms are provided by the few, and large conglomerates running the music/movie industry. Not Sky.

Sky made summission to select committee on 're writting the copy right act specifically opposing allowing DVDs to be ripped.

Telecom was broken up by government despite other providers being available.

UK Ofcom forced packaging of tv rights to prevent single operator being able to hold exclusive rights.

Interesting you note the quality is good. Are you talking amount of content or actual quality of the consumed output?

Since switching primarily to SVOD services for our viewing, the absolutely abysmal picture quality of most Sky channels has really stood out like the proverbial dogs dangly bits. This is on a 50" 1080p plasma, which obviously isn't overly forgiving of poor signals thrown at it.

I also find the MySky user experience to be quite dated when compared to the slicker UIs we get with our SVOD services.

I was referring to the picture quality.

As to the amount of content, that will vary from user to user. I enjoy the doco channel lineup, which I cannot really get elsewhere. News channels also. It has FTA, and a few other varied channels, so for me, its a fairly complete mix. Sport too off course.

Why would you watch Sky SVOD on a TV? Sky Go? I use SkyGo on and off, its quite acceptable on my iPad. I would not imagine that would gross up very well at all on a big screen

Yes, the UI is basc, but it does all I want, nice and easily. I hate the Freeview UI on my Panny BR/HDD Recorder, especially the ease of use, and I dislike the Tivo busy UI also. I'd prefer the MySky UI to look prettier, but ease of use is 100%, so I don't really care.
