If this new report holds true.. we may have lightbox on AppleTV (and a newer model) by end of the year

Mmmmm just because the Apple TV is being refreshed doesn't mean the invite only stance Apple has for Apple TV will change.

I'd say it's highly unlikely lightbox will be on the ATV this year or even longer ......unless they grow and expand to the point of being the biggest player in the sector where Apple would invite them to be in ATV.

I disagree. I'd think Apple would want as much local content on their devices as possible. It just has to be big enough (not the biggest) to be worthwhile. I don't see why they wouldn't let TVNZ, TV3 and Lightbox develop, especially once the ATV goes to an App store (why it hasn't already I don't know). We all know Apple are a bit of a cumbersome beast, and they will always do things their way, but I'm sure once lightbox is proven, they'd be happy to have it. The sooner the better.

What Australian streaming services are available on ATV? Stan? Presto? I'm not sure but I thought some were.

I hope I'm wrong it would be great to see some NZ content on the ATV but unless Apple change their stance I can't see it. Not only are Apple as you say hard to deal with invite only for ATV for example but I think they also see AirPlay as genuine equal alternative to a native app.

NONE repeat NONE of the UK on demand services are on the ATV so I don't the NZ services have a chance anytime soon. As I say unless Apple change their stance.

If they open up AppleTV with an App Store for apple TV at developers conference in June.. I see no reason why Lightbox won't have an app in place

Netflix will be on there on Tuesday. Gives them a bloody good headstart over any local providers.

There is an Australian cricket app on the Australian Apple TV, this makes it hard to believe for me that it is still "invite only". There is also an app for channel ten's ondemand "TenPlay"

When it has its own AppStore, devs outside of Apple can develop apps. Otherwise there is little point for an AppStore. Currently there is an AppStore for the ATV but its not open to devs, so the AppStore is what is on the ATV. When there is a traditional AppStore it will operate like all of the others.

Agreed. The change in stance from Apple I speak of is an ATV App Store identical to the iOS App Store. The possibilities for the ATV are endless. In my opinion it's been restricted for to long. Hopefully this is the year it becomes truly useful. Games, local TV content steaming even playing media from a NAS or cloud storage. Despite it's shortcomings its still my box of choice.

Yep, and no reason why it won't grow as a games console. And be the goto singe STB that has streams everything..

I would love it if 3Now were available on Apple TV but considering that the iPad app has been deliberately crippled to prevent use of Airplay I'm not holding out much hope.

I really hope this is true. It would make it a serious competitor for the likes of the Android boxes and for me will mean fewer things attached to the telly to get all the SVOD services I'd like. I would imagine everyone who has an iOS app would be keen to replicate it for ATV. I have two ATV's - one in the living room and one in the bedroom - so this would make them much more useful than at present.

Edited to add: Looks like you'll need to get the new ATV to get App Store? I'd buy it, if the range of SVOD apps is as good as iPad/iPhone.
