I'm curious if this is like when a hard disk starts ticking in your PC - should we replace this thing, or what? I swear it didn't use to do this shtt all the time.

also, we have both a HDD/DVD and a MySky hooked up ... and the former is always stalling in this 'please wait' mode... presumably it's only the MySky that's actually being used. but they've always been together, so I doubt this is part of the problem.

can record the noises it's making if that'll help anyone identify the problem.

If it helps my mysky+ ticks when its recording 3 things at once (yes 3) it used to tick when its doing many things, then again they tick when they are booting up also.

Unless it is giving you issues, not live pause & recording, I would leave it as is. Remember they are rented so unless you damage it theoretically sky would replace it at no charge to you.

If it has anything on top of it, take that off they can overheat and then the hdd has issues.

Mine has hummed quite audibly for some time.

Ours does it too, it is the Hard Drive.
If it is not giving you any trouble (recordings work, and playback of those recordings work) then it is OK. Sky will swap it out if it fails.

but we don't remember it ever doing this in the past (like, at all, say, a year ago). just worried that maybe this foreshadowing its failure.

The cause could be environmental. Depending on where and how the box is sitting, the sounds from the hard drive may be more audible.

It may also indicate a change in drive activity, possibly resulting from an over-the-air software update, or simply file fragmentation. Unless the noise is a constant grinding or you hear the disk repeatedly starting and stopping, it's probably nothing to worry about.

That said, if it were in a computer of mine, I'd plan to replace it if I was in any way suspicious.

No updates, but I agree with the above, remember replacing box = all recordings lost.

if its vibration try putting cork pads under the feet, usually works. also if there is a device on top of the mysky then take it off of it

My hard drive made a clicking noise for a few weeks before it died, so I suspect that is likely what the cause is.
