Hi

I just bought an LG 4K TV and am disappointed with the picture quality. I know the STB can't output in 4K, but it should output in HD (1080p) right? I've got the STB and TV connected using a good quality HDMI cable, and have set the HD picture settings to 1080 in the STB.

The menus seem slightly pixelated, and the picture quality (on SkySports) wasn't that sharp. It seemed better on Prime.

Any suggestions?

The menus, banner, etc on MySKY are only presented in SD resolution (720x576) so are never going to look great on a big screen.

I must admit I get confused by this too. We have Mysky HDi (which seems to be free on the invoice) and yet the only channel that I ever notice looking good is Channel 3? I was watching MOTOGP the other night and a little icon that popped up offering an HD ticket?
Is the Sky Sports ticket someone pointed out above? How much is that per month and what exactly does mysky HDi get you?
Edit. Noticed the reply from Jase above. Another $10. I had a look at the website. It is a bit weird how the build the pack44ages. They have little icons for HD sport in the basic package. Yet further down they mention the ticket needs to be enabled.

Thanks for your help so far everyone.

I'm not sure what the 'HD Ticket' is, nor if I've got it or not. I'm guessing not given that Sky is provided as part of the Vodafone landline/broadband connection.

The TV is 49", and I'm sitting about 3m from it.

Hi there,
I have a 42" 4K LG TV
The picture on freeview is stunning, even SD TV is very good, way better than my 1080 samsung was ( non freeview but used Tivo )
At 3m you are sitting too close, you should be 7 - 8m away.
I suspect the issue is sky, we don't have sky. I have only seen one of those vodafone box'es and to be hones the picture was not that flash from it. You need to pay an extra 10 - 15 per month for the HD content.
Have you been on to youtube to play 1080 content? What as it like?
Have you tried any 4k content? What was it like.
Are you in a freeview terrestrial area? What is that picture like? ( only 1,2 and 3 are in HD and it depends on the broadcast anyway )

My only problem is that my TV is a 2014 model and won't do the new Freeview+ coming out shortly.

John

He is actually sitting at roughly the correct distance for a 4k tv of that size, 7-8 meters is too far away and you lose the benefit of a 4k tv.

You definetly want to invest in the HD ticket, only tv 1 2 and 3 will be in HD without it.

You have to buy the HD ticket for $10 but it is free if you have Multi room. No idea why, it's been like that for years and in this day and age where HD is no longer a wow factor, they need to scrap the charge.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

To me it's an outrage to be still charging extra for HD nowadays, should be standard across all channels and not a 'premium' offering. Symptomatic of the demise of traditional broadcasting.

7 to 8 meters? Should have just got a SD panel if you are going to sit that far away from a small screen

I have a 64" LG 4k. 2.4m away. Looks mint on youtube and netflix. Really nice on 4k netflix.

Havent bothered to run the antenna up the wall to it as it has the antenna hole on the other end to the last tv I had on the wall there and CBF extending it. The HDMIs had enough to reach. Thats all I need anyway.

Totally agree.

Totally agree.  Apart from "The Zone" and TV1,2,3, I'm not aware of any other channel in the Basic package that is in HD.  All of them are SD and low bitrate at that, and look far worse than SD on Freeview.  Soho, some of the Movies, and all Sport channels are in HD.  I wouldn't mind paying $30 more if all the channels were in HD.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Seems that I need the HD Ticket - hopefully that'll solve things. Cheeky of Sky to sell it like that...grrr.

Another quick question (off topic!) : I use a digital cable (I think it's called a S/PDIF) to get sound from the STB to the amp, and sound from the xBox to the amp. One of the digital cables is damaged (the cat chewed on it and you can see red glowing light where the cat chewed it!!) - will this damage impair audio signal transmission? It doesn't sound like it does.

HD ticket doesnt give you HD on all channels, just be aware of that. Some channels like Discovery and NG are SD no matter what you pay for.

Thanks for making me aware of that.

Have been on hold for 40 mins so far, with Vodafone, trying to get the HD ticket added. Are they the most useless ISP in NZ?
