I googled for an answer prior with no result. Posting my finding.

Lightbox is running an HTML5 player (beta?/trial?) atm.

My platform mint cinnamon on 5 y/o core duo machine:

Google Chrome Browser (yes) - working well enough.
Chromium Browser (no) - video loading progress indicator but nothing else.
Firefox Browser (no) - says Linux is not supported etc.

I have not investigated the issue with Chromium (maybe flags) or Firefox (maybe force HTML5 player).

Running closed source and Google on otherwise open source platform is not a happy combo so I hope someone will find solutions for these browsers ; ).

Well I have it working using pipelight atm.. but I guess the html5 player is due to ff, chrome and edge all dropping plugin support in the next 12 months

Ah. I believed from an earlier topic it was no longer working. Good to know it remains an option for now.

Yeah I had to chage the useragent but pipelight still works

They are likely using Encrypted Media Extensions. This is an HTML5 spec allowing for DRM to be baked into the browser, however only the commercial web browsers (Chrome, IE, Safari) have added support. Non commercial browsers (Chromium, Firefox) do not support the DRM although Firefox does on Windows using a 3rd party closed source component from Adobe.

Short version: Chrome will be the only browser that will (ever?) work on Linux with Lightbox or Netflix without a plugin.

I have the impression from several sources EME is available in Chromium:

I am yet to investigate.

I wonder if you can run Lightbox in the Google Android emulator (in the Android SDK) on Linux? It should be do-able. They have an android app.
