There I was, watching Game of Throne Season 4 on Neon. Perfectly. Continuously.

Then.....I tried to start Season 5.

Can't on my PC.

Can't on my Mac.

Can't on my phone.

Can't on my tablet.

Just....can't.

No problem. Watching it anyway.

I pay the money. It looks 'Good Enough'™

But when it doesn't work, that is disappointing.

That said, the alternate viewing method actually had better video quality. Quite noticeable.

The good news is that if you ditch Neon, you can use the money saved to offset the price increase Sky's just announced on some of its other stellar services (-;

Good advice for the Sky subber.

I don't have Sky. For a long time it was part-owned by Rupert Murdoch and I don't like giving people like him any money if I can avoid it. Neon is as close as I wanted to get....and that was after Murdoch sold out of Sky in NZ.

Sorry, but lots of questions:

What exactly was the issue here?

Do they have the rights for it?

Is the service currently down for some reason?

What do Neon themselves say about it?

Are they responding to support enquiries?

The video won't play. Instead you get a message telling you the video won't play. Try later....

I assume NEON have the rights for it. It's owned by SKY and they promote GoT on their site.

The service I wanted wasn't available.

I wasn't going to make a support enquiry at 23:00 on a Thursday night. It would be a pointless waste of my time. I assume the problem is temporary....and the service may now work. That would be cool. But my opportunity to do what I wanted was last night...and I did what I wanted another way.

My problem solved....but I felt like expressing my frustration...in case others were affected (as they do appear to have been) and we can then moan about it together. Perhaps for days. It feels good.

I'm staggered by the irrationality of human behaviour sometimes.  So you're saying that you wont give any money to someone like Rupert Murdoch if you can avoid it - and your behaviour extends to past investments?

That said - you only read news content from the NZHerald (given his past ownership of the DomPost).  And nothing from the Wall Street Journal.  You wont read any books published by HarperCollins.

You wont watch any content (movies, tv) created or distributed by 20th Century Fox (and this I'd imagine is tricky given the previous lines of production-distribution-broadcast were relatively obvious but now the lines are well and truly all over the place).  And you dont use Hulu for anything you might watch from the US.  Or Netflix given its distribution agreements with 20th Century.  And you wont have anything to do with National Geographic and its content.

How ever do you manage?

Oh I agree.  I'd just find it hard to keep track of what I could and couldnt do based on my moral stand against an individual - especially one as prodigious as Murdoch given his investment history and even current ownership.

No worries, just trying to understand better was all.

It's really useful to get first hand experiences of services like this.  Thanks.
