Morning,

I am interested to know peoples thoughts on SkyGo and its reliability. I am thinking with the Olympics coming up that might be a good option for me and wanted to know peoples thoughts on the product.

Thanks in advance.

  • For large events it often falls over.
  • It can be very buggy on the PC; sometimes no video, sometimes it just stops and you have to refresh the page to restart it at which point it says you are already streaming and you have to wait.
  • The quality isn't very good even with a fibre connection. I am not sure what the resolution and bitrate are at maximum settings but its definitely not HD.
  • It has a restriction on the number of devices that can be used. This can be very restrictive at first if you are testing it on multiple devices to see what works the best or if you have multiple household members that want to use it.

The Android app is much better.

Its better than nothing but its not very good it my opinion. I think they give it to customers free because they don't think they could charge for it. If they did I would not be paying for it. The only use I got was when they had the F1 on-board channels on the Sky Sport Pop-Ups but now they no longer have an on-board channel.

For watching the Olympics and if you can put up with minor interruptions and non HD. It will probably be fine.

It's complete arse.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. I use it to watch Rugby.

Generally at my mate's house (UFB) when I watch rugby with him.  Using a Surface Pro 1 via WiFi and HDMI to TV.

It used to be buggy.  2014 Super Rugby final pixelated at times but was otherwise OK.  During RWC 2015 and during Super Rugby 2016it has been faultless in my experience.

Most recent use was Crusaders-Chiefs game from Fiji.  No issues.

I subscribe to sky sport.  Not sure if that's relevant?

As mentioned it fails often for large events. I gave up on it when it failed miserably with Bathurst....... Sky msged me next day to say "we've fixed it!" - fat lot of good that was when the race was over.......

looks like complete arse on my 4k set. Unwatchable . Fanpass by comparison looks pretty good.

Unfortunately Fanpass is only showing Sky 1-4 for the Olympics (but the 24 replay option could be handy if the event you want is on sky 1-4 and not a pop-up)

I would have thought if Sky can stream RWC 2015 Final they can handle any demand in NZ ...

Bathurst would also be an iconic event in NZ so they should be ensuring sufficient capacity.

Edit: perhaps I am getting a better experience because it's via the web browser rather than an app?

John Fellet  of Sky said during the Skodafone merger that he would love to kill SkyGo.  2% of use and 90% of complaints.

Same here, crashes on startup on both iPhone 5s and iPad Air since Thursday's update.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Remove the app and download it again.  It worked for me just now.

I have found Sky Go on an iPad Mini works pretty well.

Just tried it now though and same problem as above - won't load.

Deleted the app and reloaded from the app store.

First time needed to agree to T&C's and enter Sky account logon details.

After that seems to work as before.

Works well for us streaming on my HTPC via Skinny Broadband for GoT, Super Rugby and test matches so far.

Only issue I had was I couldn't get it to work with DNS settings in place for an unblocker site, that was my bad though!

I can see that. It seems many seem to hook it up to a TV? On my iPad it works fine, and great for when I'm on the GO. I feel many use it not on the go, to a telly, and then its a bit lame, but thats not the purpose.

I guess people without Sky might be using a friend or family members account and putting Sky on their TV's cheap or free.  You could in theory share your sky go 5 times for a small fee and subsidise your sky bill.

I don't do this at all btw.
