Lightbox smashes through 200,000 customer milestone

The Lightbox TV streaming service has already smashed through a big milestone of 200,000 New Zealand customers and is well on its way towards its next big milestone of 250,000

Having awesome content has been a real focus of Lightbox’s strategy since day one and that’s been a key driver of the growth in customers since it burst on to the market in August 2014.

CEO of Spark Home, Mobile and Business, Jason Paris says: “It’s satisfying to see how quickly the number of New Zealanders enjoying Lightbox has been growing of late. It’s a testament to the high quality of content, and the way in which New Zealanders are increasingly choosing what they want to watch when they want to watch it.

“And we’re backing this success, by investing in new deals with international studios to maintain the momentum we are generating.”

What’s even more exciting Paris says is that many households share a single Lightbox subscription. Based on the average number of people per household of 2.7, that means up to half a million New Zealanders all across the country are watching Lightbox.

The new year also sees the return of many exclusive new seasons of international shows such as slick legal drama Suits, 10-time award winning drama Better Call Saul and the most bingeworthy show to watch according to Critics Choice Awards, Outlander. Plus Aaron Paul in The Path and lavish pirate drama Black Sails.

Other blockbuster series with anticipated new seasons available this month include international hit series Vikings, Golden Globe-nominated comedy Mozart in the Jungle, Australian comedy No Activity and US comedian Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project.

There is also a hot new thriller from Fox, Chance starring Hugh Laurie, as a forensic neuropsychiatrist, pulled into his patient's dangerous life of police corruption and abuse.

Earlier this month, Lightbox signed a new content deal with Warner Bros giving viewers access to all seasons of the West Wing, Veronica Mars and Pushing Daisies, plus international hit crime thriller Blindspot (S1) and DC Legends of Tomorrow.

Lightbox operates a strategy of acquiring top quality content that is often first to run in NZ and ‘express’ from the US, meaning Kiwis can watch a show within 24 hours of it first being broadcast.

Lightbox also acquires a back catalogue of much loved and popular shows to provide choice for wider family viewing. Shows customers know but haven't seen, plus classic family favourites.

Lightbox acting general manager Hema Patel is thrilled with the business’ recent performance and inspired by the direction set for 2017.

“We pride ourselves on delivering great content for customers,” she says. “It’s a strategy that’s working well for us and Lightbox will continue to focus on investing in new shows in 2017.

“Kiwis have broken the habits of a lifetime and rapidly embraced the new way media is being delivered. We like to engage with it on our own terms. We love being able to watch episodes back to back, any time and place we like.

“Now the remote is firmly in the hands of the viewer and this new-found entertainment freedom supported by great content underpins future growth and an enhanced subscriber base,” Patel says.

So Spark have 600,000 broadband customers (last # I can find) who all get Lightbox for free yet they've only had uptake of 200,000 customers?

I wonder how many of the 200,000 are paying customers?

All spark broadband customers get free Lightbox so would be interesting to see the figures excluding spark broadband customers. Will also be interesting to see if these numbers change with the launch of Amazon prime.

I asked PR about the numbers and these aren't disclosed because they're "commercial sensitive".

Spark is primarily a tv platform. The content will be a little different to Amazon Prime. The main benefit for Spark is making their customers just a bit more sticky.

So for all we know there could be no paying customers and only 1/3 of their customer base that gets the service for free has actually used it.

Don't forget that a lot of there mobile plans also include lightbox.

All this tells us is that out of all the customers that can get it only 200k have logged in once.

It would be interesting to know who is paying for it Vs getting it as part of their plan.

I would be surprised if it was even 20% of users getting it free have kept using it.

Ironically we cancelled our paid subscription just yesterday as we don't use it enough to justify the expense, as a household we are streaming 300+gb a month so its not through lack of trying but Netflix and ondemand seems to satidfy everyones needs :P

Remember also that Spark offer free Lightbox on mobile which is how I have my subscription.

I'd say the bulk of the subscription base would be from the likes of BigPipe (offering x months with a new plan) and Spark Mobile / Broadband. I do also know of several people paying for it. It is quite a good offering with the likes of Mr. Robot available as soon as it is released in the US in full HD.

We're happy Lightbox customers. While we are also Spark broadband customers, for a period we weren't entitled to this deal, and were gladly paying for it.

Yup, the uptake is probably 199999 as I have it as part of a plan - don't bother with it tho as after several trawls thru programing I seemed unable to find anything worthwhile.

I must admit to not a high usage of lightbox of late, but I used it for Suits, Unreal and Mr Robot. Dabbled with Black Sails, Vikings, Outlander and a few others but possibly need to binge watch a few more episodes to get hooked. However, because of licencing restrictions, when I have gone back to continue viewing the seasons of some have disappeared (expired).
I'm happy to admit being included in the 200000.

Dont forget that all the pay monthly mobile subscribers get Lightbox for free too!  Thats up to 1,091,000 additional freebies.

At least Lightbox are hitting milestones - 200,000 after 30 months?.  Has added 50,000 new subscribers since June, despite Spark protesting that the regulatory environment for content is unfair.....

I accidentally became a paying subscriber the other day when my six month Bigpipe trial expired. I was expecting an email or something to remind me, but I guess not. Oh well, my fault for not keeping track of it. At least cancelling was quick and easy...

That's interesting. What were they saying about the regulatory environment for content?
