I've just upgraded to MySky HDI from the old SD Motorola box.

With the old box, when the pop-up program reminder appeared, and if I didn't make a decision, the box would automatically switch me to the booked program. This was very handy and I came to rely on it especially when I wasn't looking at the TV but could hear it, the channel switch would remind me the show was on.

The new box doesn't do this. The reminder sits on screen for a couple of minutes but doesn't switch to the booked show automatically. I'm finding this different behaviour pretty annoying.

Anyone know of a way to change this behaviour? There's nothing obvious in the settings.

Unrelated observation: the new box is also significantly slower when changing channels.

No - you can't make the MySKY change channels on reminders. The assumption (right or wrong) was that you'd set a recording if you really wanted it.

Yeah, I signed up for the new option where you can have the HDI box installed but with the PVR disabled, hence saving $15 a month. I still have the on-demand functionality but that's of limited value anyway. So on balance, all I've achieved with the upgrade is HD for channels 1-4, which I hardly watch.

It's a lesson to others that "upgrading" ain't always better. I understand that eventually the old boxes would have been phased out anyway.

I might contact Sky and see if they would put on their to-do list for future software updates. But that's a long shot knowing how unresponsive they are to such suggestions.

By the way, does anyone know if the basic Sky on demand box--the one with internal wi-fi, on-demand functionality, but no PVR--has the reminder functionality I'm after? That's the second box on this page:

http://www.skyondemand.co.nz/guides.php

That is the box I would have received had they not run out of them. Apparently that was due to the recent promotion for the on-demand service. But Sky support said since they now had the ability to disable the PVR in the HDI box and attach a wireless receiver, that box would provide identical functionality. The installer did mention that he felt the HDI box's menu responsiveness/channel switching was much slower than the non-PVR box. I can see what he meant as I've mentioned above.

They both run the same middleware so will have identical behaviour. mySky HDI is obviously slower because older model, circa 2008, and thus slower CPU. The fact that it doesn't change channels on schedule will be by design, i.e., to prevent scheduling programs to be recorded via a third party method.

P.S. You'll have The Zone in HD as well.

I hadn't noticed The Zone was in HD as many shows on it are in SD, some being very soft.

I'm not sure your contention about MYSky being slower makes sense since the very old Motorola box it replaced could switch two, maybe three channels in the time this one takes to switch one, and that box was even older technology. Also, it takes bugger all CPU power to display a simple menu system.

Either way, I'm asking Sky for a swap when they get a fresh supply of the newer boxes.

It appears Zone HD requires HD ticket, my mistake. Apparently Trackside is available in HD without the HD ticket, unfortunately not a single track feed is HD yet, only the studio and graphics.

Motorola box was older and simpler, single tuner and analog only interfaces. mySky HDi definitely became less responsive with the newer firmware and level of responsiveness must relate to available resources.

Trackside would need the hd ticket, without the HD ticket the old teletext system (channel 600) still works CURRENTLY. I have heard they are removing this once all the pubs are converted to the new system, and the teletext does not transmit over HD

TAB trucks are able to output HD but don't (as far as I know)

RAM will be the issue for the slowness.
