I can see recorder menu on TV just can't pick up any channels at all. currently I have red white and yellow cables from mysky box to recorder but don't think that quite cutting it.

thanks

You won't be able to pick up TV channels on the Sony recorder itself, it worked with the old analog TV system but doesn't work for digital/Freeview.

The only things you can record now is from external sources, as you are trying to do with the MySky. If you're getting the recorder menu then you have the TV on the right input. Now to get the MySky to show through the recorder you need to select the recorder input you have connected the MySky to (L1, L2, L3 etc) That should get MySky showing through the recorder.

Keep in mind there are certain channels that when recorded to the MySky, you won't then be able to record to the Sony from that recording (Movies etc.) as it uses a kind of analog copy protection that prevents this.

You need to select the external A/V input on your DVD recorder so you can then see the Mysky box.

Yep, as Bigglz says, connect with Av leads (the old red-white-yellow RCA connectors you will remember from VCR days).

A warning tho - the MySky (at last the Kaon Boxes) use CGMS/A on the analog outputs. Depending on how your Sony box works this mighteither (i) prevent the material being transferred onto the Sony box from the MySkky; or (ii) prevent the material then being able to be transferred off the MySky box to disc.

(ii) is what happens on my Panasonic recorder.

The solution isn't free. I landed an XdiMax Grex for about $90 (you will need to get it from overseas, they aren't sold here). Connect this between the Sky box and the recorder, and the dratted copy protection will be gone.

Apart from cost, the downside is that this also appears to soften the picture somewhat.

A better solution is an HDCP splitter and capture device, which is what I was going to move to. However, I'm so fed up with Sky that I can no longer be bothered trying to make it work for me - so instead I have dropped all my extra channel packages bar one (so far I have dropped Sport, Movies and Rialto, still have SoHo SoHo), and will cancel alltogether as soon as I can get the controller of the household to agree.sealed

Edit: fixed error.
